Hi there! My name is Brooke and I am from Utah. I just barely decided to take the plunge and start my collection. That being said, my "collection" is puny (5 Pins) and I know nothing about pins. I just know basic trading etiquette that is easy to find via google.

Any tips or insider knowledge that you might have will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! I think it's awesome you're joining and looking for information while you are just starting your collection! That means you won't be 100 pins in and then find out that most of them are scrappers (like a lot of us had happen).

Probably the best advice is to narrow what subject of pins you'd like to collect (character, movie, certain series). It can get super expensive if you try to go after everything!

This is a wonderful place to meet people to trade with and to look for information. Have a great time!

Hi and welcome! I agree with krand1276 that you want some sort of focus to your collection. And you'll probably want to start out with purchases from Disney initially to A) know they are legit and B) become familiar with pins. Then branch into training, starting with a safe place to do so like right here on DPF. You're going to have a great time!!

Welcome! I wholeheartedly agree that a focus can make starting your collection seem much less daunting. If you want to see what's out there, I suggest checking PinPics.com. You can make an account and start keeping track of pins you might want to look for. For recent releases, browse this forum and you'll find threads for 2018 releases (though be warned: we sometimes get a bit off topic in goofy ways :)).

Only for like 4 pages...

Hi and welcome!

You are all so nice!

I am already addicted and seriously only started a week ago while I was in Disneyland. Whoops!

I seriously appreciate all of your tips so far!

I am actually terrified of trading with anyone until I feel comfortable because I am not sure the different tiers of pins, and I have heard horror stories from other people of fake pins. I don't want to get too ahead of myself, so, for now I am starting my collection buying from Disney directly.

As for your collections; do you categorize it by character, movie, attractions, etc.? From the five I have gotten and want (so far) I think I like classic attrations (It's A Small World, Pirates, Haunted Mansion), Marvel characters (pretty broad, will work on getting that narrowed down), and others that I am still working out if I actually want to get started right now.

Thanks again! :)

Well, I think you picked a great group to start trading in. DPF has many helpful and honest traders, they're all great people and many are always willing to help and answer any questions you have!
I totally understand with the trading, out of 3 traders in our house, I'm the only one who makes people trades.
I store more then I display, I ran out of binders so I've just been sticking them up on boards temporarily. I got my mom and sister into Pins last year so now I have an explosion of pins that I still have to sort through.

This is my, 'Have No Space' board...

I still have a box to go through, I wish I could put them all in binders and have just a pin Book shelf but some of the DSSH backing cards are getting too big and they don't fit in the card sleeves. Sadness.

I'm planning on making a display for my mom and my sister's pins, just haven't found something I like yet. *is picky*
But if you're collection is small, I suggest just the CorkBoards, they're the best for display and holding the pins. Or you can purchase a pin bag, they're a bit pricey but your pins will stay safe in them.

People have all sorts of different collections--some based on character, some on their favorite movie, some on their favorite rides, etc. People also have different goals with their collections--some people want to collect every pin for a certain character or movie and some just collect the pins they like best. As an example, I primarily collect Mulan (just the character herself as opposed to every character from the movie) and I try to get most pins that focus on her. But I also have small Big Hero 6 and Robin Hood collections that I keep much smaller by focusing just on certain things (I only collect pins of Robin Hood and Maid Marian together, for example, and I only collect Big Hero 6 pins of the team in hero costume.)

As others have said, this is a very safe place for trading. Most of us would be happy to offer advice/feedback on what makes a fair trade. We also have some wonderful members who generously give their time to do pick-ups of park pins. So if you know a pin you'd like is at the parks, they will get it for you for just the cost of the pin + shipping! Look for the threads made by @MerlinEmrys and @speedwaystar1 (who helps @Shelterkat ) in the Pins for Sale/Wanted forum.

Welcome welcome! :D indeed, I think you've found a great place to get started. After about 5 years of traded, this group is far and away the most welcoming, honest, and helpful pin family out there. :)
