Or perhaps to you, pin mutilation. I've noticed it becoming a trend lately that people are removing screenprinting and dangles from pins that are dated in order to make them less specific and more enjoyable as a collection piece. One example is Zip A Dee Doo Disney's Yzma pin seen at 14:09 in this video. She removed the text saying happy halloween on it and it honestly looks pretty good. In her D23 haul she's also planning on removing the screenprinting from the Walt and Mickey dreamstore pin. My only examples right now are from her but I swear I've seen others. I was also feeling like the new DVC pins they're releasing would probably look better without the dangle. Is this a trend you like? Would you trade for these pins if it was disclosed they were altered? I don't plan on doing any of this but from my understanding this used to be taboo, but I feel like I've seen a lot of examples of it in the past few years. Thoughts? I kind of like it depending on the pin and if the design for the date/dangle looks rushed, but I don't know if I'd ever do it. If I can find more intentional examples of this (ofc I never saved any of the ones I happened to see), I'll post them as well.

I like it! I've never done it though because I'm scared I'll do it but then want to trade the pin and they won't want it because it's been changed.

I'm more of a purist. It's not something I would do or allow is my collection. However, I guess the people that do it the more rare they will make the original pin.

I have two thoughts on it. Personally, I do not like dates on pins - so for me, I would put one in my collection. However, I do feel that it would make the pin less valuable, because technically, it is damaged.
I don't think it becomes a rare pin - just altered and maybe not as sought after by people who want an undamaged pin.

A damaged pin is a dead pin. :( It's worthless (in personal value) if altered.

Just a clarification: my reference about the damaged pins making the original pin rare; in other words, the “undamaged” pin would become more rare. :)

I never even thought about altering a pin. I don't think I would ever do this but to each his own.

Wow, this blew up while I was away! Interesting to see all the responses. I'm in the same boat in that I highly doubt I would ever alter a pin unless it was already damaged and irreparable (such as the screen printing already scraping off). I'm too fickle with my collections to commit to ruining potential future traders. But there are some designs where you have to wonder why they didn't just let the design be. I'd be just as happy having a dated logo stamped on the back as I would one on the front. Same with dangles, hinges and free-D, unless there's a really good point to them, I could take them or leave them. I used to love the gimmick but after finding some flatlining dangles/free-D pins after a few years in my pin book, it's more annoying to have to store them separately if I don't have a board available. Solution: hire better pin designers lol?
