Today I found out I am a pin fan!!!

Welcome! I’m also curious what characters and/or themes you are interested in. Figuring out what I want to collect has been half the fun in my first year of this.

Welcome! What characters or themes are you considering collecting? We collect a little bit of everything as a family so the collection is all over the place.
Thank you. Deciding an area or a character is exactly my struggle. There are so many beautiful pins that I still can’t decide an area. I realized that collecting by heart is going to be confusing, so I need to add a bit of “head” and decide an area

Good decision to narrow down before you loose control 😅 Many of us have rabbit hole collections with no space to house them. I suggest making a list of all the characters, movies, and things you like about the parks when you visit to help see what you could potentially focus on!

Actually, I want to ask how the pin conference on 20th September in Orlando works. I can drive there but I just found out about this event and I don’t have any invitation to enter. Is there anything collateral that worth a 2 hours drive there or the opportunity to get an invitation to enter while there? Any feedback and suggestions will be much appreciated. Thank you

Some folks hang out in the lobby where the event is going to be held (I heard a rumor that Disney may not allow this anymore due to confusion of who and who didn't have a ticket at the recent Destination D23 but still worth the drive to do a LOT of trading outside of the event). There's actually several non-sanctioned pin events that weekend at various pin seller locations around Disney World property that will have exclusive pins all weekend so make sure to check out the "Events" tab for more info!

Lobby trading is for everyone and you’re more than welcome to come and go as you please. The events surrounding Disney that aren’t sanctioned are normally “buy a ticket at the door” for minimal money or a pin donation and you can trade til you heart’s content. Sometimes you get more trading done there than at the lobby but that’s just an opinion. 😅

Getting an invitation from anyone who cancels is something that can happen or now is too late? And sound so it is allowed by Disney?
For the main pin event, there is zero opportunity to get in at this point. It was sold out months ago and the tickets are non-transferable.

As was mentioned, there may be people sitting in the lobby trading as well as at the non-Disney trading events and you can participate in those. But being brand new with very few pins, I doubt you would get much out of it. I suggest getting a little more experience and learnings under your belt, as well as more pins to trade before traveling hours to an event.

And welcome to the forum and collecting! :lgm:

P.S. A good place to start as a brand new collector/trader may be Pin & Pop (pinandpop.com). They run online trading events so no need to travel and you are able to take your time and really think about trades and look up details about the pins without feeling the pressure of having to make a decision while standing there, etc. Might be a good way to get your feet wet.

Thanks. That was also my doubts since I have very few pins. Going there with no pins to swap it won’t be fun!

The non-Disney events on Saturday and Sunday include people who sell, so those might be worth your time to find some older stuff. But it could still be overwhelming and if you are still a neophyte to learning how to spot differences between real and fake pins, end up picking up some "not wanted" pins. But it is fun to just get an idea of what is out there.

For a newbie, I definitely recommend caution out of the gate. Buy Disney pins from Disney or a licensed retailer like Loungefly pins from Hot Topic or Box Lunch. This is so you can be familiar with how pins are supposed to look and feel. Most pins trading with CMs are fake, so don't get excited about a particular character or style and trade your $10 or $15 pin for junk. If you start out with some mystery sets, you will end up picking up some traders that way. Recent pins, like those in the pouches or Hidden Disney pins do end up on the boards, via newbies like yourself or people who run out of traders, and have to supplement with "cheapest available" so I recommend looking for those. But you will end up looking at a lot of boards and walk away empty handed.

And welcome!
