Okay, let's start this off right.

I think we can all agree on one thing. The work that Cicada, TheJessta, and Bricklayer have done around here is completely under-appreciated. Not only creating a community for all of us in a pinch when it was needed, but making one that most of us in the community have enjoyed using for well over a year now. Most of us only see what they do out in the public with posts, cosmetic site changes, promotions/contests, and event coverage. But what they do behind closed doors could only be more admirable. (Ready to see how computer illiterate I am?) Writing code for the site, keeping things up to date, working on better spam filters, dealing with trade/sale disputes, dealing with disruptive posts, and who knows what else.

With about 700 active members, things can get pretty hectic. Our pin family, like a true family, is pretty darn dysfunctional. Deep down, I'm sure we all love each other. Okay, we all know that's bogus, because just like families in real life, there's sections of family that aren't on speaking terms, while other parts of the family do weekly dinners together. With this many people, and the types of trust, and experiences that we have to share with each other, it's expected that (yes) there will be a nice large serving of *drama* every now and then. It really speaks to each person as to how well they can deal with drama and pressure (this is not directed at any one, just a blanket statement), but sometimes people need to be reminded that too far, is too far.

That being said... I know we all lead terribly busy lives, and pin trading is not the only thing that we have to worry about (and if it is, you're a lucky person!). This doesn't exclude our current moderators as they get busy on their own with personal families, school, travels, and other time sucking monsters. (Don't you hate time sucking monsters? Like Facebook.... such a time sucking monster. I need to find a way just to block that thing off my computer. Woah. Tangent. Where'd that come from? Ooooh! Look! Shiny!) Apparently, I can attest myself that things get busy, and I don't have the time to stalk the boards as much as I want to. When things get hectic, I'll miss PMs, I won't see posts, I miss opportunities. And these things only get buried. I think I'm beating this point to death... next paragraph.

Any how: This all brings me to the point of this thread and poll. How do you feel about the current state of moderation on DPF (Disney Pin Forum?). Note: This poll, and the below comments should not reflect negatively on our current moderators. They do an OUTSTANDING job on what they've done so far, and only strive to keep us all happy. The creators of this site wanted to have an environment where people could express they're feelings, questions, concerns, and answers freely without having to worry about over-moderation, and disappearing posts. For years this was one of the biggest complaints about the community we used before this one. That it was too heavily moderated. Well, how do you feel that is working out for us? Please, vote in this poll, and share your comments if you feel inclined to do so. I'll see if I can make the polling private, so you can vote without fear of repercussion. Comments expressed in the thread and elsewhere belong solely to those expressing them, and are not shared by others.... or whatever that legal phrase is they use on the special features section of DVDs.

Poll Question: Does DPF need heavier moderation?

Poll Options:

1) No, I'm happy with the current state of moderation on DPF. The current number of moderators, and the involvement they have in threads/forums/disputes/chat room is great. I couldn't ask for a better forum, and no changes should be made.

2) No, I think there should be less moderation. The current amount of moderators and the amount of moderation displayed is too much for my taste. I want to post what I want when I want to. Anything goes, means anything goes. Power to the anonymous!

3) Yes, I think more moderators need to be added. I think the current moderators have their plates full, and need help! They're drowning! Please add more moderators so we can enjoy some peace around here.

4) Yes, I think the current moderators need to patrol with a heavier fist. The current number of moderators is ideal, but they should read the boards more thoroughly and levy bans on members more frequently, and more often.

5) This poll/thread is dumb. I'll tell you why in the comments. Self explanatory.

I think that wraps up my post. I hope I've been as partial as I can in this initial post. I will vote and post my personal opinions a little later in the thread once it's started taking on a life of it's own. I didn't want to persuade any votes initially.

In closing, please remember these last two things. A) This is feedback. It's not personal, and feedback can always be used to make things improve. Please don't make or take anything in this thread personally, and when proposing ideas, please do so thoughtfully and reasonably. Have a resolution already in mind. Every one here is still a human being and has feelings. B) This site is privately owned and operated. Any decision(s) can and will be left to the owners of this site. Their dime, their rules.

Edit: Okay, poll created. It is private, so your name and what you voted will NOT be displayed publicly. You can also choose more than one option if one doesn't fit your answer the best.

I think it is dumb because you did not use my references in options two. Mad Max! THUNDERDOME! THUNDERDOME!

(Great well written thread though).

I think we can use few more people. Not necessarily to keep the peace, as our discussions are fairly civil lately. But, we can have few more people to field our questions regarding zap addresses and trading worries.

Also, other stuff, like give-aways and such keep forum lively and fun.

I think we need more people because there are going to be people who have issues with trades, sales and other things and if they message a mod it could be days on end before they hear an answer from a mod and that is if they are lucky enough to get an answer.

I had an issue on here recently and I was lucky enough that two days later I got an answer and that was after the issue was resolved between me and another member.

Can we nominate people we think should be mods? I have one person in mind who always helps me out when I need advice on an issue. I typically talk to this person first before I go to a mod now because the person is usually good at responding that day.

To keep this thread from being personal, and keep it on track, let's refrain from recommendations or mentions of specific people. Thanks!

I agree I say we could use more people to keep an eye on things. Im on another forum where they have Mods from other time zones so there would always be someone online to talk to and to help out with matters that need sorting out. Just a suggestion as if something major happens when the mods are asleep then have to wake up to PM's and all the drama then with other people from different time zones it could have been sorted out before they wake up XD

I think it may be a good idea to have more moderators so our current moderators never have to feel under any pressure. I am sure looking after this site is a lot of work, and that TheGrimGrinner has made some good points. More hands will make light work of it, and ensure the continued smooth running, as of course we never know what life will throw at us from day to day.

I'm with either 3 or 4. Either we need more mods or the current ones need to be stricter.

Things I think they could do something about right now:

1) Enforcing the rules in the sale/trading threads. Most people are pretty good and respectful but there are a few repeat offenders that are constantly breaking the rules with more than two threads, not listing prices, constant bumping, etc. Also, when a poor seller is identified they need to be reprimanded or kicked off. Routinely not responding to interested parties, saying you are selling certain things and then don't when someone actually asks about them, etc. Those things need to be watched and addressed.

2) Grammar patrol - I'm sorry, I know it is nit-picky, but this is a huge pet peeve of mine. Typos and occasional misspelling is totally understandable....but complete and utter lack of effort is really aggravating! Some posts are just flat out unreadable! I used to read an old VMK forum and they actually had a rule that you needed to use proper grammar and spelling or your post would be deleted. And it was mostly kids there!

On the drama stuff I'm a little more torn. Often it is a result of just plain idiocy, and unfortunately that isn't a crime. Whenever it does occur the common thread seems to be specific people. I just don't know if mods can really hand out bans to people for being hypocritical and playing the victim when they are really the problem.

Lately I've just been wishing that this was DPF Survivor and that we could just vote people off the island.... :) I've noticed a lot of good people dropping off lately because of the environment so it would be nice if something could be done about it.

Edit: hmmmm......I wonder if there could be a more automated post rating system??? Similar to the way you rate threads, you could rate posts. The ratings wouldn't need to be public, they could be just for mod usage. The ratings would be compiled by user. If the community is consistently sending in poor ratings for a specific person that could be a red flag that the person is toxic. .....kind of like political approval ratings..... If your approval rating drops below 40% you could get some kind of warning from the mods that your posts are not being received well and that you should try to be better. And if they drop further, you are banned for a length of time. If you come back and still aren't better then you are banned for good.

I think our mods are fantastic!!!! But I do agree that adding a few more would help the current mods. Take pressure off them so that hopefully they could enjoy it a little more . . . and I would still really like to know the mods views on the DPF Gold Idea :0)

Hi,
As a newer member I don't know how much weight my opinion holds, but I would like to see more moderators. I know it must be a HUGE job to run this forum, and since I have moderated forums before myself I can appreciate that. But this is a HUGE forum membership-wise, and three might not be enough. I PMed a moderator myself about a problem over a month ago, and I have yet to get a response (it is still a problem). Splitting up the work seems like a great solution. And I would also like to see threads that seem to be unraveling into huge fights/personal attacks be locked instead of letting them go on and on (or at least have a mod post SOON and say, if this thread does not get back on track it will be locked, this is how it works in other places I post). But that is just now I feel about it, perhaps there is some unseen (to me) benefit in those types of discussions.

At any rate, I love this forum and I am so glad I found it! :)

I believe that adding moderators would help to relieve some of the pressure and time constraints on the current mods. As you pointed out, they all have lives in addition to moderating this board. If the had a few more helping hands, maybe things would change naturally instead of being forced. We have some wonderful folks on the board who would made great moderators. Even if they got part time mods, it would relieve the pressure. That's my two cents worth (of course in today's economy, two cents isn't worth much).

This is a good poll, but maybe a little biased as some people may just say 'yes' because they'd like to become a moderator themselves. But then again, I am fairly new here and am only using my knowledge of other forums, mainly, and I don't want to offend anyone if this is completely untrue.

Your post demonstrates how little you know about the people on this forum. If you read the thread then you know they are not seeking nominations for anything and replying yes doesn't mean you want to become a moderator. It is simply a tool for gathering information in order to make this forum a better place and to help our moderators do their job without having so much pressure and stress. Our forum isn't like "other forums" and I'm sorry you think that.

Wow, wait, this makes it sound as if I don't like the forum...? I love it and I think it's one of the best-run ones around. People have been nothing but friendly and welcoming towards me. I was merely suggesting a possibility, not saying that everyone on this forum is secretly looking to gain something out of it.

It's ok. I didn't see anything negative in what you wrote. In theory, I think your point is valid. But in reality, there are probably very few people that really want the added responsibility of being a moderator and therefore there is probably little chance of the results being skewed by those people who would be interested.

Once again, sorry if I offended anyone, that was not my intention at all. I was just looking at both sides of the coin. But thank you though, I know sometimes it's hard to quite know how things are coming across when they're typed.

Basically, everyone I've met on here so far has been lovely and I'm entirely grateful for that.

I meant to reply to this long ago, but it slipped past me somehow.

I will agree with the thread and poll, however, and admit that we do need some help. While it may seem like we aren't around or don't post as much as we used to during the board's infancy, we still check in daily and have made note of the contributors. Moderator spots will be appointed by myself and Bricklayer after some internal discussion, at which point offers will be made.

We had put the decisions off for a while, as we figured, without enough time for the board to mature, choosing a bunch of moderators outright may not only cause some animosity between members, but would also not give us enough of a "history" with the moderators we choose. It could have very well been that any founding mods we might have appointed at the start may not even be here today!
