Tonight, lets discuss a horse that may have added to the gene pool of many of the Brittish Isle horses... The Spanish charger. I use this term loosely because well there is no name that I can find for what the Roman's would have ridden during their occupation of the Isles. Spain has been knows for Thousands of years for their exceptional horses. So I am going to use the Lipizzaner horse for the images below. Romans wore armor, and since they did, the needed a strong horse to carry them. The rode over entire countries, so the horse needed stamina and "go power." So the Chargers the Roman officers rode were likely about the size and build of the modern day Lipizzaner horse. Highly trained war mounts, todays dressage movements come from the training these exceptional horses received. In fact, many of the "airs above ground" seen in special horse events have been taught to horses since pre-roman times. If you would like to know more about the movements they were taught and WHY please let me know, this is a fascinating topic.
