I'm not really new to pin trading as we did some trading during our last Disney trip in 2005, but we haven't done much for the past 9 years until our most recent trip. This was my youngest son's first trip to Walt Disney World, so I thought it would be neat to get some pins for him to trade. I bought one of the lots off of eBay, believing the advertisement that they were all tradeable. After reading this board some, I'm beginning to have doubts. We still have about half of the pins that came in the lot as my son liked quite a few of them and wanted to keep them. None of them are LE pins, so how do I tell if they are scrappers or counterfeits? Are all of the pins supposed to have the Mickey head indentations on the back?

One of the sets my son was really excited to complete was the Hidden Mickey window decal family pins. I'm guessing some of them are counterfeit though as both the baby and the mom are listed as 1 of 5. The dad has a different design for the pin trading Mickey logo on the back, too.

My son is going to be heartbroken that this is going to end up being a hobby that is too expensive for him to continue correctly now that I know better.

Best Wishes,

Kim

Hello and welcome to the Forum! There is information about scrappers and counterfeit pins under the "Pin Comparison" section of the Forum. I'm glad your son is liking the hobby. It can be expensive, but there are members on this site (and Facebook) that sell "real" pins for reasonable prices. Good luck to you!

Hi Kim, welcome to DPF! It's great that your family were able to enjoy pin trading & collecting together!
Try not to be disheartened about scrappers/fakes, they are around a bit bin this hobby but there are also ways to avoid them. It's possible some of your lot aren't genuine; some people aren't fussed to keep these if their kids like them. Others make them into craft projects!
The Sales boards here are a good place to get started with some good pins & there are many articles containing info on telltale signs of scrappers.

Don't be afraid to ask questions & get stuck in; we're all learning all the time, this hobby keeps you on your toes!

:)

Welcome to the forum! I think alot of us have gotten "fake" pins before realizing that not everyone is trustworthy. Luckily I found this forum and there are honest, nice people here. Feel free to ask questions:)

Hi welcome!!! When I first started I also bought one of those lots, but I could tell they were all fakes when they came :(! So what I did was cut off the pin stub bit and use them to decorate iPod cases etc :)
