I'm waiting on mine now, so I won't be adding my story until its in my hand.

i think my three rarest pins are:

http://pinpics.com/cgi-bin/pin.cgi?pin=80878&sid=8554
got the two tangled pins on a whim before i was serious about pin collecting. walked into dsf and got them.

http://pinpics.com/cgi-bin/pin.cgi?pin=74543&sid=8554
took my goddaughter to walt disney studios to watch princess and the frog and blindly bought this one, too.

:D

my most rare pins are the ones i got before i even was serious about this stuff! haha. funny how things work out.

When DPF was just starting a trader broke up an le50 set of pins from DA. I didn't have any idea what they were, but I was just getting into Alice, so I bought this one: for $25. I should have scooped up all of the other ones. They would have been amazing traders, but I wasn't super into spending a lot of money at the time. I felt like $25 was steep, but now I know it was the deal of a century. :)

I would say my rarest pin is either of these two. I bought the first on ebay, and the second on a pin site.

My little sister's rarest ones are probably the two below, the first bought on ebay and the second on DPF.

I think "rare" varies on the level of desire for the pin. I have a few LEs that are 250 but I wouldn't call them "rare". The one pin I currently have in my collection that I would consider rare, because I was never going to be able to find it on my own, was an incredibly generous gift from gbdb4ever; my top grail, [pinpics]17813[/pinpics], and an LE750. It's truly my absolute favorite pin in my collection. There are rarer Treasure Planet pins but this one really called to me; there's no writing on it, no dangle pieces that might break off, and it depicts Jim as he was, a fun loving teenager that loved solar surfing.

The one that immediately springs to mind is my Silver Prototype of
pin83152
Pin 83152: Disney Auctions - Lion King Character Set #2
(Adult Nala) Silver Prototype

The person who sold it to me on Ebay thought it was a regular LE 100. So I scored a bargain, there.

I own lots of rare Jasmine pins too that either 1 person or none are trading. My most favourite from this is:

pin21080

Pin 21080: Walt Disney Home Video Jasmine

And I can't say where I got it from because I get all my rare/htf pins from there.

Although possibly not the rarest in trade vs want ratio, Grim zapped me with this when I first joined the forum - it's still one of my favorites:
pin31358

Pin 31358: Gadget from Frame Set “Cheddar to the Rescue”

And my rarest would most likely be

pin81948

Pin 81948: DLR - Disney Girls - Reveal/Conceal Mystery Collection (Rapunzel ONLY) - CHASER

My boyfriend bought it for me on eBay after I obsessively stalked it - and I'm very glad he caved :)

simple answer.... EBAY...lol

Same here. It just took a lot of patience to find my "rarest" pins. I'd look on eBay daily for these pins, and when they popped up, I watched them like a hawk. And I say "rarest" because one is an open edition, though they are pretty hard to find! These are the pins:

pin17114

Pin 17114: Button - DLR Haunted Mansion 25th Anniversary
I had seen this button on eBay a few times, but I was always outbid at the last minute.

pin2764

Pin 2764: DLR Sign Series - Lost Parents
As for this pin, there was one at a buy it now price that was out of my budget. Then one day it went for auction and I somehow got it for less than $10!!!!!

Pin 78776: Original Disneyland Cast Badge with Name

warrick.jpg

Purchased from the original owner's grandson. It's an original Disneyland name badge from 1955. Regular Disneyland employees got a metal badge with an employee number on it. However, high level area supervisors got a personalized metal badge. This particular badge belonged to the head of Disneyland's Department 41, Maintenance Management. Less than a dozen of these badges were made, and only four are known to still exist today. In fact, they are so rare the Disney Archives doesn't have one, and they had only seen a single picture of one from an old Disneyland employee newsletter.

This may or may not qualify, but I love telling the story and I consider this pin MY rarest to me that I own. The Haunted Mansion Piece of History pin released on November 15, 2009. I arrived that day not having a speck of hope of getting it, but I took a chance in the 1:00pm stand by line which started lining up about 11:00am. I "hovered" by the line until Ronn let us start the line by the old Rocket Rods door and I ended up being 2nd in line! AMAZINGLY, they still had around 10 pins leftover! I couldn't believe it! After all the chaotic lining up, police called in, line cutting, near rioting, people not lined up correctly, etc., it's just astounding there were any left to be had! But I was blessed and got my 2 pins! That was my happiest, rarest pin acquisition for me! And I didn't even have to arrive at DLR at the crack of dawn or earlier. I didn't even get to DLR until 10:00am!

At first, I had no idea how I would figure out my "rarest" pin, since I don't dabble in a lot of valuable stuff (mostly, only if I was able to buy something when it was originally released and it has since appreciated). But after reading a few posts, I realized I have one!

I have a gold prototype version of this pin. I've never added the prototype version to Pinpics.

At the 2001 NFFC Annual convention, Becky Carter (at that time Disneyland's pin manager) gave a seminar about pins. She brought 6 of 7 prototype pins and held a silent auction. It wasn't a money auction, but you bid pins. I "bid" a Figment Artist Choice that I was able to purchase myself for $10, and a Cast Atlas Downtown Disney Marketplace, that I had traded for, and I won! So I figured my investment was about $15, which I was very happy with.

The majority of my rare pins I have gotten have been purchased in secondary market (eBay and shows). A few I purchased them new. I have traded in the parks for a couple of them, found one on a laynard and inherited / been gifted a few.

That is really cool!

This is probably my rarest pin. I love the set of pins that this pin was part of but since this one wasn't released it bothered me that I didn't have all 12. I found it on ebay with a BIN or best offer option and ended up getting it for $60 even though I would have payed more. When I first saw it on Ebay (I believe in December or January after when it should have been released) it went for over $400 so I was happy to get it for under $100.

When things were hard, I sold my most rare Beauty/Beast pin on eBay, [/sniffle], but pin karma is beautiful - when I was back on my feet I found someone selling theirs on eBay for almost the same price. :) So I sold and got it back the same way. :)
