Hi, all! ^.^ I was just wondering something.....

I've seen lots of Pin Collectors saying that buying Pins in Lots of 100 or 50 on Ebay isn't safe, because they are all scrappers? I've never thought of that. Because, before I buy ANYTHING online, I look at the description of the item/title of the item/reviews of the item to make sure they are genuine and real. So, I'll admit, I was about to buy a Lot of 100 a couple of weeks ago. I looked at everything to make sure they weren't scrappers, even the reviews. The description said that they were all genuine and were good to trade and all that. They even said if you weren't satisfied, they would give you a full refund. ALL the reviews for it were positive, too! Some of the reviews were even from hardcore pin collectors like ourselves!


So, does this sound like a safe item to buy? Or are ALL Lots a big NO NO NO? I just want to know before I get anything of the sort. I would love to hear from any of you who HAVE bought a Lot of pins! Thanks!
 
All lots sub $2-3/pin are scrappers and on top of that huge lots are normally full of fakes. Think to yourself why would anyone sell 100 pins at a loss? They wouldn't so they are getting the pins for cheaper than you're paying. I'm not sure of anywhere that sells genuine Disney pins for less than $2 a pin.
 

Thanks, that makes a lot more sense. Well, there was this one thing on Ebay where it was each pin was 1.00, and I bought 4, so are those definately scrappers or could they be real?

If you have already purchased a large "lot" look through them, go pin by pin. If a large number of them are fakes, report it to Evilbay, and request a refund. The only way to stop the scrap/counterfiet trade is to make it non-profitable.

You should take this link down...but judging by the pics there are 3 almost certainly fakes in that lot...the bottom middle is definitely a fake look at the colors and how they run together etc the two lollipops have been faked so much i would doubt those are real especially if they were pulled from cast member lanyards
 
hi it has happened to most NEW pin collectors. We discover these little gems and get excited, leave vacation, high on Disney and want more!!!!!!! So in comes EBAy..and "what a deal"...i can get so many pins less than at the parks..yada yada yada
Then you start going to a forum or pinpics and learn about the counterfiet market and then notice half the pins you have are cheap crap. Now that i am more experienced i can see how horrible they are and can spot a scrapper or two all on my own!!! So live and learn my friend. We all wish we could get these lovely artworks for less than a dollar.
 
If it seems too good to be true then it generally is. I like to think if I was a seller, if all the pins were real then surely it would be worth more than what they are offering. So something must be iffy when everything is sooo cheap.
If you need pin lots then head to the sale section on the boards. As you know they are from pin traders on the boards, you know you are getting a good deal and 100x less scrappers than on ebay
 
I've won a few pin lots for around $50 that had 30-40 pins and only a couple were scrappers. You just have to be able to look and tell. If the pins you are buying are the exact ones pictured the odds are better. If the pins look legit, have a few CM exclusives, 2012 HM's, one or 2 LE's, etc then your odds are even better. The newest ones aren't typically scrapped right away. Also look at their other auctions. If all the lots are different pins, the colors are right, they have multiple pins that are not known scrappers, etc. then you could take a chance. Look for the tell tale rough metal in the pics, don't be afraid to ask for a close up of a few pins.
 
Ok so another question on these "lots". I have noticed with the JL pins all they have on the back is the copyright sign and Disney. Do these "scrappers" have the same thing sometimes? If it has that then, how else can you determine it's a scrapper.
 
If you want to buy a lot of real pins, sometimes sellers on here will sell them anywhere from $2-$3 a pin and they are all real pins. Nothing extraordinary but they are legit pins that you can trade at the park.
 
Most lot sellers are selling scrap pins, with maybe a few good pins thrown in. I would agree with thekaratekid, look for forum members selling $2-3 pins here. You still save a LOT of money and are assured you get good pins and help put an end to the scrap sellers.

Okay, here it is:

1.) Any lot from China is straight out. Apologies to the few honest HKDL traders/sellers, but chances are those folks aren't selling lots that big anyway.

2.) Any lot from someone selling TONS of lots is straight out. Something is fishy if they have that many pins for that price.

3.) I will maybe go for lots with quality pins (think someone's collection with a wide range of pins from DA to OE), but I will be checking those pics, feeling out the seller, etc. Even then, you might get stuck with a scrapper or two...but at least some of the pins are worth it.

4.) When it comes to feedback and lots, the feedback can't always be trusted, because these guys are doing so many sales to people who are just buying pins for their kids to trade at the parks. They don't know about scrappers, or pin culture, so they leave good feedback, because they can't tell any different. That said, I do always check feedback and I tend to memorize the sellers I can trust.

5.) Your best bet for cheap, legit lots are the folks that live close to the parks. Like Rocke01, or others. I've sold some myself. This is because we can go to the SALSA sales or outlets, and sometimes they have pins for around $2.

This irritates me. I agree with the huge lots are usually full of fakes but I sell some pins for $2.00 and under when I have too many. I've been to the SALSA sales and have tons of pins that I don't need so I can share the wealth so to speak so I don't need to buy/sell scrappers/counterfeits.

If anyone is looking to buy cheap traders, check the sales board on dpf before you go looking on ebay because like Nicole said, a lot of us go to the parks, live near the parks and have the pins to sell. JMTC.
 
I think it really depends who is selling them. If its a seller who is always selling them and is showing one of those pictures where all the pins are jumbled up together then avoid at all costs!

Always look for original photographs and sellers who take time to write descriptions!

Don't beat yourself up PinPuff, I think the vast majority of us had to 'go to school.' Ah, the maturation of a pin trader:

Scrapper lots are the elementary school stage. This is followed quickly by the awkward time in middle school when, after we figure out the scrapper/real issue, we buy the real deal; but THEN we had to deal with the confusion as to why no one would trade with us?! Rejected much?! Uh, yeah.

That's when we moved on to high school and the lessons on edition sizes started. "Ohhhh, you mean an LE 100 isn't the same as an LE 2000?! Well, gosh, I guess that does make sense."

Most of us weren't born knowing all about this hobby. We all had to 'go through school,' so fear not, stick with us, you'll soon be wearing a mortar board covered in pins!

I am so, so grateful to all the people who schooled me kindly/gently so many years ago.
