I've never done a trip report, but we went to the Oogie Boogie Bash last night and had a lot of fun. Now, I'm not starting a debate whether it's worth the money or not. The events/parties are something my husband and I always enjoy, so we attend when we can. I'm just reporting on what it was like and what we did and what was available.

We were in the parks earlier in the day. When we headed back to our room at about 2:30, there were long lines at the California Adventure gates. The party started at 6 pm, but you could get in 3 hours early. People were ready.

We rested for a bit and got changed. My husband dressed as Waldo from Where's Waldo and I dressed as Carmen Sandiego. We headed back to the park and arrived about 5:20. Security was short and that's when my husband started getting the "I found you!" comments. The lines through the main gates were short, but then everyone was funneled into a line to get the party wristband, trick-or-treat bag, and map. More Waldo comments. He had three more before he got his wristsband. Once we were through, we headed to Katz to pick up pins.

The cast member said the jumbo event pin sold out the first day. Sad. But I asked for 2 of each of the other pins. She started to ring me up, then asked for my annual pass.

    "I don't have a pass."
"Oh, then you can't get the pins. They're for annual passholders."
"All of the pins are passholder pins? I can't get any of them?"
She thought for a second and then said "Oh, just this one." And removed the two that were the passholder only.

Thank goodness! My heart had stopped for a moment. I didn't remember them being passholder pins!

So, then we headed across the way and looked through a couple of stores for the party Spirit Jerseys I promised a DPF member I would try to get. It dawned on me that they must be at the Gone Hollywood specialty store around the corner where they usually keep event items. As we walked there, I realized the line I was seeing around the corner was probably for the jerseys. Geez. (More Hey Waldo! comments as we walked.) We stepped into the store and asked a cast member. They confirmed that the line was for the jerseys. They would start selling at 6 pm exactly. It was about 5:50 pm at that point. My husband went to stand in line as I asked how much the jerseys were going to be. Same price. Awesome! Joined Josh/Waldo in line around the corner. We chatted with the people infront of us. Then all of a sudden, the line started moving. Quickly! I wasn't expecting that. I thought it would be a thing where they bring you in one or two at a time, you tell them what size you want, they ring you up and "Next!" Nope, they let you all in, there are two racks toward the back of the store (one to the left, one to the right), you tell the cast member what size, they hand it to you and then you get in line and wait to pay. By the time I got to the rack, they only had XS, S, M and L. The DPF member needed a S and a M, so I requested those. Then I realized people had more than one each. I've never been much of a Spirit Jersey person, hadn't paid much attention to the craze, but I decided to grab a large for myself. Hopefully it fits. The cast member was very nice and joked "Now you have one for each member of the family!" We spent about 15 minutes in line, though it seemed much longer.

When I got to the front of the line, I realized they had pins behind the counter. Especially the non-event The Spell in Cast pin that was released last week that I was wanting. I asked about getting two of them and she placed the other party pins in front of me too. As I had promised to do a couple of pin pick-ups, I asked for two of each again. The CM promptly stated that the one pin was for annual pass holders only. Okay, struck out on that one too, but was able to fill the requests for the other ones. I paid for the items and we headed out the door.

Across the street was another long line. Josh thought it would be for a treat trail, but then we noticed it was going into a theater. That's probably where the Mickey Trick & Treat show was playing. We didn't want to watch it at that time, but there was another line in front of Off The Page for the Oogie Boogie treat trail, so we got in line for that. We chatted with the lady in front of us who clued us in that the app showed things better than the map they gave us. Good to know. Put the map away and used the app the rest of the night.

The treat trail took us into the Animation Academy and Turtle Talk area. It was completely decked out for Oogie Boogie. And there was an Oogie Boogie up on the stage dancing around and talking to the people. Lots of treat stations to go through. Most everyone went through and then left. We, however, decided to visit Anna and Elsa...

So, I'm in a little bit of hot water. I booked this trip and right smack in the middle of my trip (today) is my best friend' son's 5th b-day. So, I'm not there for his b-day today and I'm not there for his party tomorrow. However, he is absolutely in love with Elsa. I approached the two cast members standing at the entrance of the greet location and asked if they were there and seeing guests. They said yes and escorted us back to the doors. We stood there for a few moments and then the CM did the Anna knock. I loved it! We were led into the room where Anna and Elsa were giggling with each other. Elsa had just tripped over her dress and Anna caught her. They hugged and perfectly stayed in character the whole time.

They greeted us and talked. They commented on my trench coat and how it was going to be getting cold soon. We took some photos together and then I asked my favor. Would they please say Happy Birthday to my sweet "nephew"? They were very gracious and said even more than I thought they would. I was very thankful. Hopefully that would get me out of the doghouse.

We left the building and headed across the way to the Stage 17 area for another treat trail. This one was Dr. Facilier. We wound back and forth in line until we were just about into the building. There were probably about 10 stations for candy at this one. Dr. Facilier was on the stage talking to people as they went by. When I walked by him, he looked at me and asked "Where are you?" I replied "Here." He didn't like my clever answer and told me to move along and get out. The CMs seemed to have the most fun looking at Josh and saying the "I found you!" bit. There were a few more comments as we went through that line.

I finally noticed that the night was sponsored by Mars Wrigley. Lots of M&M's. Yay! Big highlight.

When we were through, our little bags were fairly full, so we dumped the contents into a much larger bag. A trick we learned from the last party we attended. (We had gone through the lines of that party and ended up with 17 pounds of treats!)

We continued on towards the Guardians of the Galaxy ride. There was another treat trail going through the waiting area of the Hyperion theater. This one was the Mad Hatter trail (Johnny Depp, not Ed Wynn animated). The trail moved slowly, but there were about 8 candy stations. The entire trail was outside, but shaded under trees. At one end of the area was The Mad Hatter sitting on a stage. When we went through, he was mostly talking to himself. Lol. He is mad afterall. While in line, I saw this wonderful Mary Poppins costume. There were a few young girls and one other adult dressed as Mary Poppins in her white Jolly Holiday dress, but this one chose the standard nanny attire. And I loved that the was pushing a stroller. I tried to get a decent photo, but she was turned away from me most of the time.

At the final station, the CM asked if we wanted apples. Yes! It was hot and another thing I had learned from last time, those apple slices can be very refreshing! She threw the package into my bag. I was happy.

The end of the line kicked us out toward the front of the Guardians ride. We looked around for Marvel heroes. There was a line of people waiting, but the characters must have been on a break. We didn't see any of them.

As we headed back down through Hollywood land, the sun was just about set, so everything started to look more dark and the lights were taking effect to help the surroundings look a little more ominous. We heard more "It's Waldo! And Carmen." comments as we walked through. I have to admit, that was a lot of fun. The trenchcoat in 78 degree weather was not an amazing thing - it's a real trenchcoat that I wear regularly in our 50 and lower degree weather back home. I had even taken out the wool liner before we left and I was still sweating. But still, it was fun being the different characters in a sea of Sheriff Woodys and Bo Peeps and Wreck it Ralphs, Aladdins, etc. It felt like we were the only ones. Until we neared Carthay Circle and we saw we weren't. There was another Waldo standing in line to see Mickey. A little deflation. But in the scheme of things, it didn't really matter and that feeling didn't last long. We were off to Cars Land!

On our way to Cars Land, there was a character photo station by Grizzly Falls. It had a Kingdom of Hearts backdrop. Someone had messaged me to look out for a Kingdom of Hearts Goofy and the Blue Fairy, so I took a look. It wasn't Goofy, but Donald dressed up in his Kingdom of Hearts outfit. And when I stopped to get a photo, there was the perfect partner with him.

We walked up a little ways to the entrance of Cars Land and there was a huge group of Minions and Gru taking their picture in front of the sign. I thought this was sort of genius if you have that many kids (and adults) with you.

We walked down the main street of Cars Land and saw a treat trail across from Mater's Jamboree and through the Fillmore area. We continued down the street, but couldn't find an entrance to it. We saw Mater and another car (I haven't watched Cars, so I don't really know the names) dressed up. There was a third one, but I didn't get the photo of that one.

I'm a little short on photos starting here. As I got hotter in the outfit, I wasn't as snap happy, so I'm missing some photos I wish I had taken.

Soon, we were at the intersection. I dashed off to Luigi's Honkin' Haul-o-ween. My favorite ride! We didn't do that one last visit, so I had to be sure to ride it this time. A 5 minute wait was perfect for me! We chatted with a lady dressed as Alice. Her mom sewed most of the outfit and it looked amazing! We rode the ride and then went back to the intersection to sit down and plot what we were going to do next.

I pulled up the app. 35 minutes for the Racers. Ugg, I didn't want to spend that much time in line. That, plus I'd be dragging my husband onto the ride and he was hungry. I was a little bit too. So, I went to pull out my apple slices to refresh and cool off. But what the heck. These weren't apple slices! What she called apples were actually freeze dried apples. Boo. That was a trick.

We headed over to the short treat trail across from Flo's Cafe. That one had a few stations and moved quickly. "I found Waldo!" from another cast member. This trail put us back out about where we started. We went back to the entrance and turned in towards the sourdough bakery and the Ghirardelli shop. There was the entrance to the treat trail! There was also the exit of the treat trail from the Boudin sourdough one. I had a feeling it would have been more efficient if we had gone through the park in the opposite direction. We got in line. It crawled. I think there were about 8 stations at that one. Very, very slow. Time was stopping and I was melting. There was not much of a breeze there and I needed a respite from it all. At the very end, I was happily rewarded with real apple slices! Yay! We snacked on those as we made our way to the entrance of the sourdough factory.

The Boudin had maybe 6 stops and moved very quickly. One of the cast members looked at us and clevery stated "I'm glad you found each other." Aww! Me too!

We were running low on fuel and I needed a full break, so we stopped at the tables at the wharf area. Josh grabbed some potstickers from the Lucky Fortune Cookery (another eatery crossed off my list - just a couple left to go!) while I took off the hat, the coat, the lanyard and my glasses, put my hair up in a bun and cooled off for a bit. The potstickers were actually really good! I make my own (mom's recipe), so I can be a little snobby about them but they were wonderful! While we relaxed and dumped the treats into the larger bag again, we caught a couple of Pokemon and could see a bit of the parade from there (it's not a great viewing spot). It did look and sound like the parade that we saw a couple of years ago. We also saw that Phineas and Ferb were meeting on the far side of the area.

When we had rested (about 15 minutes), I got re-costumed and we headed over to Pixar Pier. I honestly cannot remember anything from putting my costume back on until we were standing in front of Toy Story Mania where I spotted another Waldo. This one was a woman. The sign out front said a 25 minute wait. There was no line whatsoever, so we got on the ride. The Waldo lady got in line for the ride too, so there were two Waldos riding the ride at pretty much the same time! (I beat my husband by a whopping 200 points - 174300 to 174500.) I started wondering if maybe the Racers line was nonexistent even though it had said 35 minute wait. We should have checked. Oh well, we had moved on.

We walked along the boardwalk until we saw another treat trail under the "carnival rides". The entrance was at the Jumpin' Jellyfish and let out at the Silly Swings. We definitely went through this whole thing backwards. But we went through the trail and came across another CM who was very happy to see us. "I found Waldo! And Carmen Sandiego! Oh my gosh! My 90's self is SO excited right now!" He started jumping up and down with excitement. That was awesome and absolutely made my night. This treat trail had about 10 stations and for some reason moved very slowly. It also didn't help that people kept lining up single file when there were two lines. Another CM: "Carmen Sandiego!" I smiled and stepped past, still waiting in line. Then she checked back in with me again: "Wait, it IS Carmen Sandiego, right?" I assured her she was correct.

We finished that treat trail and Josh was very hungry by now. We headed over to the Paradise Garden Grill so I could cross off another eatery. Unfortunately, they were closed, so we stepped into the Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta (there's a large Mickey head pin board at the beer station part). Josh grabbed the spaghetti and meatballs and I got the ravioli with pesto sauce and pine nuts. Yum! We sat down to eat and the costume came back off for a bit.

As we rested, we could hear the Villainous water show playing. We could see some color and the flames shooting into the air during parts (also not a great place to watch this show). Some of the music was fun to listen to, some parts were different.

I was sending updates to people about the pins I had gotten for them, when a creepy, but fun character walked past me towards the bathroom...

So, the creepy character continued on to the restroom and I got my phone ready for when she came back by. A few minutes later Shock walked past us again. I asked if I could take her photo. She noted that her friends had better costumes and to follow along with her. We came up to a table and Lock and Barrel were sitting there. The teeth, holy cow, check out the teeth! On all of them! They graciously posed for a couple of photos and then we headed our separate ways.

I threw my costume back on and Josh and I headed towards the Little Mermaid ride. There was an AP treat trail going through the Goofy's Sky School. Not being AP holders, we had to skip that one, though I'm pretty sure it was cool!

The water show was well over by the time we walked by the area. At that point, there wasn't really a crowd until we turned down toward the Grizzly Rapids area. Things bottlenecked pretty well there. There was a lot of stuff to do, and not much room to navigate. The event pins weren't for sale at the Embarcadero Gifts shop.

Right in front of the water paddle wheel were three character meet and greet stations. One was empty at the moment. The other two had Prince John and The Sheriff of Notingham! I have never seen either of them, so I was super excited! I don't take much time to actually meet characters (unless there's a short line or I need a favor from them), so I snapped a few shots of them with random people for my collection.

On the other side of the walkway, there was a very long line to get into the villain's grove into the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. As we walked along, we saw that the line went from the opening of Redwood CCT to the entrance of the Grand Californian back to the Redwood CCT and halfway back to the Grand Californian again. The line was crawling. So, unfortunately because of time, we had to skip seeing it. We turned into the Grizzly River Run for another treat trail. There were a few treat stations here. It wasn't until most of the way through that we realized that it was the Evil Queen trail. Now on the trails, it can be hit or miss as to whether the CMs allow you to stop and take in the villain or rush you along "keep moving forward". At this one, there was almost no line but the CMs were rushing you through, so I didn't get the chance to take a photo of the Evil Queen. She was up on an 8 foot tall stage type thing with a large cauldron. She didn't seem to be interacting with the crowd, just conjuring up her potion. It was an eerie feeling, nonetheless. The trail let out back next to the Robin Hood characters.

We walked past the Villains Grove line which hadn't gotten any shorter and still seemed to be crawling. There were still so many people in the area that it was shoulder to shoulder trying to get through. Very uncomfortable. We finally made our way down towards Soarin'. There was another treat trail along that area next to the plane. They had opened uo the gates and you could walk down past the end of the building. There was a lot of green lit smoke at the end of the area. This was where Maleficent was hiding! She was up on a small stage yelling at all of us. Here the CM was very nice and encouraged us to line up along the rope to watch her and take photos. That made us feel very welcome and we appreciated it. We watched her for a minute and then moved along to finish the trail.

We decided to go back to the World of Color viewing area via the Grizzly Falls/Cars Land entrance because we did not want to squeeze our way back through the Grizzly River Run area. As we walked by the Humphrey's Service area, we saw a couple of Talespin characters, Baloo and Don Carnage. I didn't get a very good photo. I snapped this quickly on my way to the restroom. The event pins were not for sale at Humphrey's either.

We walked past Carthay Circle again and this time the tower was lit up. You could hear Oogie Boogie talking and see different projections on the tower. We could see people were lined up to meet characters by the fountain and there was Pinocchio and the Blue Fairy! We made our way past the Kingdom of Hearts location and Goofy was there this time.

When we got back to the WOC viewing area, there was about 15 minutes until the show. There were signs that said VIP viewing area only. You can walk past that and go to the lower area to watch. There was plenty of space. We sat down, checked our phones for a bit. The announcements came over that the show would be starting. A CM walked through and made everyone stand up. It would have been nice to sit and watch (that's one thing I loved about Tokyo Disney - most people sit to watch at parade so more people can see). So, we all grumbled and stood to watch the show. We liked it okay. It wasn't fantastic, it wasn't awful. I've been saying for years that I wanted them to have a villains show around Halloween. Not quite what I had envisioned, but it gives them plenty of room to improve for next year. Still yet, we generally enjoy what is offered and try to be happy about things. The thing that struck me was that the animation of the little girl reminded me of The Fairly Oddparents. It didn't feel quite Disney. Still, it was a lot of fun. The scenes that use the fire are always crowd rousing. The cheers are always fun to be part of. If you stand in the lower area, it warns you that you'll get wet. They're not kidding on this one. For the first time in the night, the trenchcoat was very helpful.

After the show, it was almost time for closing. People made their way to the exits. As we walked back past the Kingdom of Hearts location, I saw another Carmen Sandiego! There was one more treat location in the middle of Buena Vista Street. It's easy to miss with all of the people heading out at the same time. Josh managed to snag a snack. I just let it go.

In the end, we ended up with about 10 pounds of candy.

Overall, we had a great time! I do wish we had gone through the park in the opposite direction. I also think that arriving as early as possible may have given us time to go through the villains grove and time to watch the Mickey show and watch the Descendants dance. I'm not sure if they start at 6 with the party or if they start earlier.

Other tips: Have a great time, keep cool, chat with other people, and remember to take that extra bag if your focus is trick or treating!

Well, I'll give a little spoiler on that. They weren't Disney sanctioned. But they were pretty good.

And that is very cool about your brother! I loved watching that show! Lynne Thigpen (RIP) and Rockapella. I was hooked.

Thanks for taking to time to read what I've written so far! I appreciate it!

I went the first night and had a fantastic time! IMO, the Villains Grove was worth the entire event, it was INCREDIBLE. To be starkly contrasted with the special World of Color show, which I thought was DREADFUL (but the kind of dreadful that it's so bad it's hilarious). Interested to see what you thought of these!

I agree with @Connies_Hobby please continue. You're sharing your thoughts and opinions of an event you attended. While I can't speak for everyone, I'm very much enjoying reading your report and experiencing the event vicariously through it (especially since I won't be able to attend this year).

Can't wait to read more! Despite all of the poor reviews, I loved Mickey's Mix Magic. I fist pumped to techno "Let it Go" even when others looked at me like I was insane. And I can't wait for WoC Villainous!
