So I am always finding myself in a struggle of trying to not start new collections. I am still pretty new to the pin trading world so I have TONS to gather in my current collections.

Currently I collect Stitch and I also started collecting Coco. Then I have a few misc pins that I just like.

I keep seeing all these posts of others I'd love to collect like just this past weekend I'm like okay I have to collect a princess, which one should I? The struggle is REAL! I feel like I am thinking up something else cool to collect every few days!

Who else has this struggle?

I took a break , now I feel it's a good time to start a new collection .
For princesses Tiana/Aurora/Cinderella always seem the least collected to me , Belle/Rapunzel are really pricey
If you wanna range of characters there's some really nice mystery sets that have a plethora of characters tied together by a theme , they're usually more affordable too
 
I just collect what ever happens to appeal to me. I don't worry about being a completionist on all of the things I like or I'd have way more pins than I can handle. If I find it cute and I like it then I am going to buy it if it is at a reasonable price. I try to stick to what I know I can pick up myself and in my own currency!
 
When you figure out how to stop the urge to start a new collection, please tell me the secret as I haven’t discovered it yet. I have a wide range of collections but not near complete in any of them. It’s okay to have multiple collections or only one. However, that being said I do have one or two rules that help curb my excess. I don’t collect fantasy pins and I don’t do pin opps.
 
What are pin opps?
 
Ah I love pin opps. I try for them on occasion. I figure if I get a grail one I can trade for something that does fit my collection or sell it and buy LOTS of pins haha! Eventually, I'm sure I'll add something else. I just need to make sure to write in my will that all my money went to pins and if my kids are hoping for money they better hope they can find some crazy pin people to sell them to LOL

I am going to let my kids trade in the parks when we go, I know we will end up with fakes but I think I'm going to make a really cool craft for the kids trip pins. Not sure if those count as collections tho LOL!
 
$$$ is the best way to just say no to new pins.

Or, thinking ahead - assuming that every dollar you spend on pins today will be as worthless as beanie babies five years from now... would you still spend the money? If the answer is yes, and you have the money, then go for it. But if the idea that a $300 pin today will be worthless down the road concerns you, then don't spend the money.
 
I tell myself that I'm never out of the woods on my current collections and then save my money and energy for chasing those.

There are a bajillion pins out there that I would love to have, but if I bought all of those as soon as I saw them, then this year would have been impossible and disheartening. So, I stick pretty close to my main collections. Luckily last year was quieter so I could save my pin pennies and use them this year.

Also, I don't think being a completest will ever last forever. The first time I was a Charlotte completest, there was only one pin of her. Then there were 2, then 3, and now there are 7! As soon as you think you're done, another pin will pop up.

Lots of words to say that I don't need a ton of collections to have pins to hunt.

The struggle is real. I am horribly impulsive with starting new collections. I see a cute design and I have to have it. I keep telling myself that if I don't actually start collecting that particular character/movie/theme - I can always use them as traders.

I did manage to narrow my focus on my main collection: Cheshire Cat. I'm picky on which pins I go after. I also collect for my husband (Star Wars) and two sons (trains/railroads/engineers/trolley and Nemo/Jack Skellington).

I have to learn some discipline when it comes to pin collecting. I am all over the place.

Sorry, this is of no help but I do feel your pain.
 
I don't limit the number of collections I have. Which is why I have, ummm, a few pins... Money is the limiting factor, so collecting "a lot" means that I can't collect all the $$$ pins. But honestly, I don't want to spend $$$ on a single pin. I have a mortgage and a car payment, and my senior cat needs asthma meds, I can't reconcile spending an equivalent amount of money as one of those things on a single pin that I know that Disney had made as cheaply as possible. Precious metals, these are not.

Just make sure the pins you get are the ones you really love. And not because "everyone else is going nuts over this pin, I guess I need one too." It's very easy to get carried away by what everyone else is doing, and that path leads to frustration (most of us don't have the $$$ or the proximity/access to keep up). Completitionism also seems to add an extraordinary amount of stress and anxiety to the process. By having a lot to collect, I can always pivot to what is less stressful and more obtainable at the moment. There are always successful treasure hunts when anything is treasure.
 
Maybe I had a struggle when I first started, but now... cannot really recall. And after 4.5 years, I do not struggle to focus my collecting... I am actually more likely to pair down my current collection to focus my efforts on pins I love (the longer I collect the easier it has become to do this.) Adding collections with any regularity would cause stress (due to time/effort to obtain the pins in addition to the added cost) and I want to enjoy pin trading (its my fun escape from daily grind). (Moana is the only significant collection I have ever added and I had paired down my main collections significantly when I decided to start chasing Moana.)

Misc. Pins: Yes, I also allow myself to keep a few misc. pins I just love (even if not part of my main collection... some of these I have enjoyed for awhile and then traded away. The beauty of pin trading.)

And then there are the rules (my name says it all, Mickey Mouse rules and I have rules.) Examples... I only chase a small fraction of pins with words, dates, dangles (they break!), hinges (they break!), painted pin where the paint chips (who wants that?)
 
What hopemax said.. I have a lot of collections (far easier to say what I don’t collect than do) but I’ve been collecting over 19 years- I have collections that are ‘unlimited’ where while not a completist I’ll ‘collect them all’ others I have a ‘hard limit’ on I can collect a lanyard full no more. I also have a board of ‘randomness’ that has the same limit- but Some of my favorite collections started as random ‘I don’t collect that’ so it’s great in moderation
 

Very true! Although many of the beanie babies I happened to have ended up being worth a lot of money....I liked the weird ones and was a freak about keeping them in perfect shape, yes I was that weird child.

But I definitely get what you mean, I do think we shouldn't sell ourselves short tho. I don't think all of the grail expensive current pins will stay that way but anything Disney generally keeps SOME value. Money is the biggest factor for no new pins for me. I have been trying to stay focused with the budget I do have for pins, that's really my issue.
 
It's a pindiction! start with one you like then look to complete the set. Or trying to complete a particular set and complete other sets in the interim, especially the HMs. Just collect the pins you like.
 
Ariel can be pretty pricey too. Jasmine can get pricey too. The original 3 are the cheapest to collect, in my experience. I’ve collected all the princesses at one time or another.
