I don't think the problem was the way these were released. This release was particularly bad because it was Tangled which is really popular and because it was a holiday weekend so there were probably tons of out of town people there for this release that typically aren't there. So that explains the gobs of people.
The prices are a different story. Sure, with more people at the release the prices were sure to go up some, but something is fishy about some of these auctions. I think there is some major shill bidding going on. It seems to me that one or a few people banded together to drive the prices up and see just how much they could get for these. A scene ending very soon is way above an exact same scene that is BIN. So why would someone pay $100+ more for a pin they could buy for way cheaper right now? Oh, and the account driving up the price is also brand new.... It just doesn't make sense. I get that Tangled is popular but most cels were pretty decent. I think one of the worst PODMs released was Peter Pan because it had a lot of roof tops and cels with no characters. A good cel with Tinker was bringing $150 and there were a lot fewer of them available than the top scenes for Tangled.... I just there is some definite shadiness with these auctions...
Edit: Yep, definite shill bidding. I looked into it a particular seller's auctions that had extremely high bids. New seller, zero feed back. Five recently ended auctions. When you look at the bidders you will see a brand new account, also with zero feedback, driving the prices up. This same accout had bids on each and every one of this seller's completed auctions. And when you click on that bidder's ID it shows their bidding habits and that account has only bid on five auctions total. Now, why would a brand new account bid on all auctions from one seller with zero feedback when the same items are available BIN for cheaper from other sellers?
I strongly caution anyone considering dropping a lot of money on one of these pins to really think it through.
