Question on Disney Animal Kingdom Pin 6099 Carnotaurus Dinousar Attraction

Hi all,

I am not actually a Disney Pin trader but recently I came across some pins I got as a kid from Disney World in the early 2000s and sold them on eBay. All three pins were attached to a hat when we purchased it and were related to the "Dinosaur" attraction in Animal Kingdom. The pin I sold which I am now having an issue out of the buyer on is the one listed in the title.

The buyer is now saying I mislead the description due to the backing and is wanting a return. Even though, the pictures shown here were the ones on the listing. They provided a pic from another listing of the 6099 pin that says, "Disney Made in China" where mine says "PinSource Made in China".

To me, it just seems like Disney probably used PinSource as a manufacturer of pins back then to explain the difference. The other two pins that were attached to the hat said Disney Made in China and not Pinsource but like, we didn't go out and buy some fan made pin. This was purchased at the park.

Is there someone here that can provide some understanding? Am I right that Disney probably used other manufacturers? It's all made in China either way but is my pin somehow not authentic for whatever reason? The buyer is referring to it as a "Fantasy" version. If for whatever reason my pin is a fake, I'll give em the return, but I just don't see how it is and thus trying to salvage the sell. There's really not alot of info on the internet in regards to this.

I don't have an answer for you other than I'd keep that one considering Dinosaur closes forever next month!

@hopemax may be able to help more. And my comments below are based on information I have gained from multiple sources including Hope.

I would have more confidence in early 2000s pin as they were less likely or did not get faked (per my secondhand knowledge.) The line in the sand may be ~2005. Are you able to pinpoint the year? Was it before 2005?

Open editions pins could be made in different factories and this could account for the different backstamps.

Making a call based on a picture is limited, but looking at your pin picture, I do not see any red flags that scream fake to me. seems like a nice pin.

I had a mail trade go south once when the person receiving my pin called my pin a fake (one I bought the pin directly from Disney.) They were absolutely awful and it took some effort to get them to return my real pin. So I sympathize with your situation. I agree with @Shelterkat ... get the pin back and see what happens when the attraction closes... your real Dinosaur pin may go up significantly in value. When everyone starts looking for pins from the closed attraction. Other examples: Splash Mtn, Muppets

I also just looked at the other sold and current eBay listings... yes it is unfortunate your pin's backside does not have any similar ones to show the potential for variety. (I don't think that would flag this pin for me... I like you back story of how you came to own it and your small number of current ebay listings back-up that you are not a huge pin re-seller.)

Hello. I agree with this.

I understand given the problem with counterfeit pins why newer people are suspicious and quick to jump that "because it's different, it's fake." Even older collectors may not have examined their pins in fine detail and not noticed differences between their pin and another. I remember several years after Pinpics started people were reviewing their pins and noticed differences in the molds that had nothing to do with counterfeiting. Just different factories, different molds, different runs.

I collect Animal Kingdom pins and have been looking for this pin for 25 years. I have not seen any mention of fakes of this pin. I haven't seen very many of this pin at all. It is not a fake or fantasy pin. The number under the Pinsource is their telephone number. People aren't making unauthorized versions of pins and putting their telephone number on the back. You provided photos and they bought the pin anyway, and now are freaking out.

But! This Pinsource pin is extremely interesting to me! They are a current supplier of Disney pins. But not a lot of pins. Just some recent Animal Kingdom Cast Member exclusives, some D23 stuff. I had assumed they were a newer supplier, but your pin tells me they are an old supplier and this is new information for me! This happens. Monogram had a Disney license, then they didn't have one, and now they have one again.

So thanks for sharing. I would eat the hat these pins came on that it's not a fake. What I suspect. The hat was originally sold when Animal Kingdom opened in 1998 and they used a bunch of suppliers to make sure they had enough merchandise on time. Then once the park came online, suppliers had consolidated when merchandise was reordered. Or Disney ended their relationship with the original supplier, and had to find a replacement for a reorder. Either way, the differences are due to differences in supplier for the reorder. There are likely more of the non-Pinsource version.
