Ok so let me ask this. First I am new to the pin trading collecting thing. My question is what exactly is considered a "scrapper". While I was in Orlando, I found a huge Disney section in one of the Wal-Marts there and they had pins. Now they did not have the actual Disney stamp on the back. Just a copyright logo and Disney. I can post a pic later if anyone wants me to, but is this considered a "scrapper" I know it's not "Park Authentic", but is it crap junk just like scrappers? I bought several while I was there, just because they were cheaper and had some that the trading store did not.

I dont know about them but could probably be Jerry Leigh pins, did they come on a backer card with that was black with blue strips at top and bottom with Disney on the top corner??

I wouldnt class them as scrappers so dont you worry about that, scrappers are more the ones you buy on ebay in the lots of 10,25,50,100 starting at $0.99 or those that say choose your own grab bag etc.
 
Scrappers is the "catch all" term for pins that are not commissioned by Disney or one of their licensees. There are 3 groups of pins that make up the scrapper category. 1. True scrappers - these are the pins that during the manufacturing of Disney's order, ending up being kicked out for quality control. Factory seconds, is another term you hear for other goods. 2. Overruns - this is when the factory completes Disney's order, and then makes more from the original molds. Disney didn't order them, so they aren't supposed to be distribution. 3. Counterfeits - when a factory produces a new mold using an existing pin as a model, and then produces their own run.

The pins you bought at Walmart have been properly commissioned by a Licensee. As the previous poster said, they are probably Jerry Leigh pins. But that's why they don't have the same backstamps as pins for sale in the park. But the proper method of producing them was followed, Disney is getting their cut, etc. So don't worry about them at all.
 
Thanks for the quick response. I do not remember what the backer looked like. I threw all the backers away with my first sets. I know know I should keep them, just in case. I know it's not the kind that most would trade with, so that is not a concern to me. I just liked them and were the first ones I had bought. I was just curious if they were considered "scrapper" or not.
 
you can also find out tinkersprouse by getting a pinpics account and logging in your pins. I found this essential and interesting and made collecting more fun. You learn alot about your pin, if it is authentic, if there is a scrapper alert on that pin and what to look for--boy i caught some good fakes (thank goodness the bad guys cant spell to well) also i highly recommend the wonderful thread about scrappers and counterfiets on this forum---look above..super informative.!!!
 

Now that's not fair. I sell pins in grab bags and while I don't sell them starting at 99 cents it's not fair to class all people selling pins in lots as people selling scrappers.

There is also a thread somewhere on this site telling the difference between a scrapper, counterfeit, etc

Scrappers are pins that basically pins that didn't meet quality standards and were supposed to be "scrapped", what everyone calls scrappers today are actually counterfeits. The pins they sell in Wal-mart and Target are authorized resellers.

Scrapper: A pin of inferior quality which did not make the grade at Disneys factory. Rather than being thrown out or recycled, someone (usually a worker) picks it up and resells it on the cheap, on the side.

Just because a pin has a couple paint dips does not make it a scrapper. I have seen countless pins on DISNEY shelves that have dips.

Counterfiet: What people often mistakenly call scrapper. A fake pin, manufactured someplace other than a disney factory. Often with errors, differences in color, severe paint dips, incorrect backstamps, lighter wieghts, rough edges....

A pin with the disney copyright on the back, purchased at Walmart is not a scrapper. It is likely a jerry liegh manufactured pin. Which often trade nicely, are open edition and usually have some nice color and design. Some of my favorite open edition disigns have turned out to be JL manufacture. I believe disney has a couple places they sell pins on the east coast that are not disney owned.
 
So even though I buy it at walmart it could still be traded?? That is good to know. So the scrapper will have a different stamping on the back? Or is that the counterfeit? I remembered I do have a pic of the ones I bought at Wal-Mart. i will upload it it see if it is the JL version. If those are still considered "good and tradable" I may just have to get some more when I go back down there. Not necessarily for trading, but for me and it's just nice to know that they are not considered scrapper.

Some Jerry Leigh pins are not only tradable but highly desired for having an original design or creative pose. They are VERY tradable both here and at the parks.
 
Awesome!! I am so excited to know that. I only bought a few because I was afraid they weren't considered "real" Disney pins. Know that I know they are still good, I will make sure next time I am there to go back and get more!! For anyone in the Florida area, I went to the Walmart close to the Disney park. I am not sure exactly where, but I can google if anyone wants to know for sure. I can't think of the street name off the top of my head. So other then the backer card, is there any other way of knowing it's a JL pin? I am hoping to make another trip there this summer to see my brother, and may end up getting some more. Maybe I need to seperate my pin collection to Disney authentic pins and JL pins..lol. Now I am super glad I found this forum to find out!! Thanks so much guys for the help.
 
Its lady luck with the pins. I went to Orlando and stayed at springhill suites seaworld and the CVS out in front had a whole rack of simply lovely Disney pins. All authentic, all tradable. So always keep your eyes peeled cause you never know. I even saw a few basic fab5 pins at a Bargain World.
 
I am now starting to look anywhere they could possibly be for pins. I live in Missouri so I figure it is less likely to see them here, but still look when I go to stores. This has for sure became my favorite hobby. Makes me want to sell all my craft stuff so I can get more pins..hahahah

Just to clarify, Target does not sell Jerry Leigh pins. They are similar in design, price, etc., but the Target pins are exclusive to Target. Jerry Leigh pins (in Florida at least) are primarily sold at Wal-Marts close to WDW, but have also been found at drug stores, hotel gift shops, etc.

I love Jerry Leigh pins! For us Orlando locals, they make great traders because they are hard-to-find elsewhere, and they come out with new designs at least 2 or 3 times a year. I actually wish I bough more of some of the Jerry Leigh pins from last year, because now I can't find them and hardly anyone is trading some of them...but yes they are totally tradeable, and in some cases make excellent traders!
