i am completely new to this site and am trying to navigate it, i know this is a silly question, but why next to thread questions are there gray and reddish envelopes? what do they mean? thanks everybody

Not a silly question. If I understand what you're asking, I believe all threads start out with a gray envelope next to it. The envelope becomes red to signify that the thread is 'hot'; that is, sufficient people have shown interest in it (not sure if it's in views, responses, or a combination of both).
