Pins I hope to have but probably never will:

Maleficent WDI profile
Briar Rose Heroine
Designer Aurora single
Sleeping Beauty BT
Hades/Meg villain dangle pin.

I’ve mostly made peace with only really wanting the Aurora heroine, not a whole flock of them even if I collect the character. Same with Maleficent. I have a better chance of scoring Dr. Facilier from that collection than her, as I have Hades and Frollo.

The BT, like most, is just nuts and that Hades/Meg pin just boggles my mind as to why it’s so expensive. Low LE I know, but DAMN.

Here's a Happy Story
I had been looking for this pin FOREVER...several years at least. It's PP 6162 from Tokyo Disney Sea. I didn't think I would ever get to see one in person, let alone have one....and then one of my lovely pin trading buddies (Connie) at a NJDPT event had one and we traded. A my most special pin trading moment. The pin itself is tiny is size, but special in many other ways...

This has been my #1 grail since day one of collecting, and I've never seen it listed below $1,200. I cry every time it pops up on eBay.
 
I believe that very little is truly impossible. The hardest ones just take time, money, patience and friends. And lots of all of those.

After almost two decades of collecting, I'm still missing a handful of pins from being a completist - but my missing ones at this point tend to be "few in the public forums" (cast member award pins) or "few in the western world" (Japan pins) rather than "requiring selling internal organs". Still, you're in it for the long haul or not. And if not, don't expect the impossible, just enjoy what you can get in the moment because if you're not in it for the long haul, it's not worth trying for the hardest stuff IMO.

With that said, a friend of mine and I have often joked that the last pin I will still have to find when I'm otherwise a completist will be this one:

    Walt with Characters

It's not some low limited edition pin. It was released here in the U.S. The two times I've gone to the Florida event, I found traders who claimed they had it and would bring it to the event the next day and both times they flaked on me. But it's this one that has eluded me for... well... almost 20 years. And still I don't believe it is impossible and I believe that some day it will find its way home to me. Don't know when and don't know how or for how much, but I have pin faith.

Point is - very little is impossible if you're committed. Even if it takes you more than a decade to find. As this one is still eluding me.

 
I think I’m an almost completist for the Disneyland 60th anniversary pins and am missing 5 pins. 3 are kind of around, 1 of which is the super jumbo that I regret not getting for MSRP at D23 MOG. (Why did I remove it from my basket???) The other 2 I took pictures from FB and thought I’ll see them around. I never saw them again! One day.....but hopefully before the 70th anniversary!

Well, here's my current one:




Like many of you, I could list the carousals, nouveau, Gomes, and Beast/Prince (which I bid on and lost at $75, right before it spiked and went crazy)...they're all on my Wants list, and have been since I created my page. But for something different, there's this beauty.

Never have seen it in person, even. It shows up on Ebay occasionally, but always just a little more than I want to pay for it.


And here's my success story:



This pin, as many of you old timers know, was scheduled for release on Disney Auctions right before it changed over to Disneyshopping.com. It, along with several other pins and sets, went missing, and were never released. In 2006/7, I decided to become a Jessica completionist (really, just a horrible decision, I had no idea the rarity of some of those pins at the time).

So at one of the pin events, one of the auction lots (or was it a grand prize winner prize?) had the AP set of this pin, making this unreleased pin suddenly out in the world as LE 3.

I lamented the fact that I would never, ever have this pin, and it was going to bother me forever.

Then, the impossible! One morning in 2008, all the "missing" pins were dumped on disneyshopping.com with no warning. It was very weird, because it was the middle of the week, when pins were usually released on Sunday evenings. Excited and scared, I went to the site, but alas, they were sold out. After a quick round of crying and cursing, I sucked it up and got on eBay and paid $99, knowing it would never sink below that again.

And that's the story of the impossible Jessica pin that became possible- and something that I hope will happen with the costumed Tinks that were never released.
 
I didn’t think I had one, and then I remembered this existed.....



I already spent way too much on the regular WDI hans, and it’s LE 15, so there’s no way in hell. :,( I can live without it, for sure, but it sucks to know I will never truly be a Hans completionist!
 

Eventually you will have it! I think these progression sets started out of WDI at a high price ($275) so that's one of the reasons why these sets go so high.

I haven't been in the pin game as long as many other folks here, but this is one of the pins that I personally witnessed the value skyrocket in the blink of an eye. I'm still boggled.

I bought one for $35 (new in original packaging) when it was released. It arrived with a little schmutz on it, so in my naivete I tried to clean it off. I was ... vigorous in my efforts, and Dinah lost her nose. Ha. Horrified, I bought another (the price had jumped to $40!) and threw the original one in the trash. I remember feeling so *decadent* for spending $40 on one pin! At that point, most of the older and harder to find characters in sorcerer hats were, like, topping out around $80.

Once it was in my collection, I stopped paying much attention. Then, while doing a broad search sometime later, I saw that it had gone past $100. And then it kept going. And I still am amazed when I see one for sale somewhere with an asking price that is astronomically higher than what the original "secondary market" supported.

Plus, ya know ... the edition size is minus at least one. (I've grown so much in my time here, ha ha ha.)
 

Woah! You might have been able to get $200 for Dinah without a nose. LOL. I have this pin too, bought it in a lot with Alice Reveal/Conceal for less than $200. I wanted the Alice pin, I gave sis the Dinah pin since she collects cats The rest, as they say, is history...
 
As with many UP collectors, this set is probably the ultimate grail that almost no one will ever get, especially for the prices they go for now.



I have two others, though:

This one is so ludicrously expensive for what it is ($100) that I can just never justify buying it and no one ever has it for trade or wants to consider reasonable trades for it.

And this one always manages to slip through my fingers when it does pop up.
 

But WHO KNEW then? At that point, a damaged Dinah would have netted, like, $15. I didn't know about the "long game." I didn't have any patience. I STILL don't have a lot of patience, but I see progress. Ha ha. But the Alice R/C *and* the Dinah sorcerer hat for less than $200 is pretty freakin' spectacular. Li, you know how to hustle!
 
This is the pin that I kick myself for not trading when I had the chance and I haven't been able to trade for it since - you never see it on ebay so can't even buy it.

Oh, I might as well add this one. I love Disney's Piece of Movie pins - these are my all time favorite series of pins. I have all 24 from the series but I'm on the hunt for a grail scene for my Peter Pan. I would love a large scene with Tink, like the one below - but who can afford the price on ebay.

The pins that I will never get are the last 6 marquees to make me a completest: Enchanted, Cars 1, first version of Little Mermaid, first version of Lady and Tramp, Meet the Robinsons, and Pinocchio.

A buddy of mine said that you will never find these as you're looking too hard for them. Pins you need but don't focus on will always pop up and he is right! I waited for the Herbie the Lovebug marquee for 5 years and then suddenly I obtained 2 (one via trading and another was a birthday gift) and the Bridge to Terabithia popped up on the bay for a Buy It Now of $60.

I figure if I am patient enough the pins will eventually come my way at a decent trade offer or cost.
