urgh, of course.
then bam, no cigar (who said this?)
Meaning
Fall just short of a successful outcome and get nothing for your efforts.
Origin
The phrase, and its variant 'nice try, but no cigar', are of US origin and date from the mid-20th century. Fairground stalls gave out cigars as prizes, and this is the most likely source, although there's no definitive evidence to prove that.
It is first recorded in print in Sayre and Twist's publishing of the script of the 1935 film version of Annie Oakley:"Close, Colonel, but no cigar!"It appears in U. S. newspapers widely from around 1949 onwards; for example, a story from The Lima News, Lima, Ohio, November 1949, where The Lima House Cigar and Sporting Goods Store narrowly avoided being burned down in a fire, was titled 'Close But No Cigar'.
Do you live near the border? I'm in Toronto so I ask sellers who won't ship to Canada if they'll ship to a UPS depot. If they do I get it sent to one in buffalo (90 minute drive) and pick it up for $5 a package and $1 a day for storage. Some sellers won't want to because they'll need a confirmed address for paypal.
Likewise I do this when I shop DS to get the free shipping
i need to talk it out with someone.
honestly. i have been looking for an item for a year. a year filled with complications on ebay, craigslist, whatever. so close and then bam, no cigar (who said this?)
then it pops on ebay and of course it doesn't ship to canada. why would it?
and the seller is not being responsive.
...
i need the tracking number. economy shipping doesn't come with that. i need it to be shipped to a u.s. service but...
anyone had similar "issues"? i'm just sadden that i write long and descriptive emails hoping to persuade the seller but i don't even get a reply. not even a "no, i'm sorry, i can't do that, good luck". and i guess i shouldn't really expect such treatment but it sucks, because i don't know the next time the item will pop up or what condition it would be. snow globes and all that.

edit: my gravy, i sound... a taaaaad whiny. sorry guys. just... rough day. still getting used to the website so sorry if i posted my aslkdjaklsdja in the wrong forum. just gotta be patient though right?
Keep in mind that the seller may be dealing with personal issues beyond their control. I had an awful situation like the one you are having once. I found an awesome anime figure online that I had been wanting for a long time, and I finally had enough money to get it. When I bought it the seller said she would ship it out the following Monday. Monday came and nothing happened. Then Tuesday came and still nothing happened. I messaged her that whole week and she never once responded. I had never had a problem with sellers on eBay like that so I was getting rather frustrated. I finally emailed her saying I was opening a case with eBay if she wouldn't respond. I even texted her because she gave me her phone number when I bought it and said to call her if there were any problems. A week and a half had passed and I finally filed a complaint. The next day she messaged me saying I was an #$%hole because she has cancer and has to go to the hospital a lot with no way to check her eBay account. You could argue that I had no way of knowing that because she gave no notice when I bought the item nor was it in her profile, but she was still mad. Needless to say she canceled my order and told me to never do business with her again. Believe me when I say that I felt like crap afterwards. It bothered me pretty bad. So just always keep in mind that the seller may be dealing with issues beyond their control and that may be why you are getting no response.
Do you have someone you could have it shipped to in the states and then have them send it to you in Canada?
If the seller isn't responding, doesn't that mean "no"?
i don't think this will pan out. i can't even ask the seller if they are willing to ship to a us/canada parcel service in the states. and i don't know if they will have to pay international sale fees because of my canadian card on paypal.
i wouldn't be so frustrated if things like this didn't happen one after the other.
edit: i'm super not cut out for collecting things. lol not like i had my eyes trained on anything else for the past year other than this.
edit: yes, i would even be happy with a "no". cause then, at least i know.
Have you shipped to a service before? I've done it quite a few times and I've never had the seller compain that they have had to pay fees because of my Canadian card on paypal, so I think that's one less thing to worry about
How long has it been since you've written? Hopefully something just came up and they have been unable to check.
I don't really collect any specific characters, pretty much just anything I think is neat. What about you?
i had a seller who was dealing with "computer issues" but i waited a month for my item. i contacted her, gave her enough time to reply and filled a complaint.
it's just... and at that time, i think i thought about an assignment for school. my teachers always told us that computer problems were always happening. and i remember having my computer shutting down completely and not starting back up, but i went to the library and coffee shop, and finished my research.
i understand there are personal issues and situations, but i also think it's important to notify people. like for work, you wouldn't just disappear for a week without an explanation, even a short one.
i'm really sorry that happened to you. but... and i might sound heartless and inconsiderate but i think they shouldn't have called you that. you don't know what's happening in their lives and since sites do have various scammers and just... people who don't really send you things at all... i just... urgh.
when dealing with other people's money and all, that should be taken seriously (i'm sure there is a different way to word this, and i'm not saying sellers do not take it seriously).
also, i should mention that i SEE the seller posting new items. if they have time to do that, surely they have time to tell me "yes" or "no", right?
i hope i didn't step on anyone's toes, i'm always trying to be considerate to both sides... ; u;
I think you were considerate of both sides. Yeah its true that she should have gave a notice or left some kind of warning when I bought the item, but it just bothered me pretty bad. I remember being depressed for a week or so it got to me so bad. Just never assume that they are ignoring you for no reason because they may just be busy or dealing with issues. But believe me when I say I greatly understand your frustration.
Yay! Congratulations on finally getting the snow globe you wanted! Still it kinda sucks about the lack of water in it though. But im sure you can take it somewhere to get more water put in it like you said. Again congrats!
