Please understand that this post is not meant as any attempt to attack Lansam and its plans for Pin Pics. This is simple inquire.

Lansam has stated that it plans to leave the current core features of Pin Pics free for all users. I assume this means the current database, search features, wants / owns / traders lists, and linking Trader A with Trader B would remain as is.

Lansam has stated that they will be offering a Premium Membership service which will be used to cover their operating costs. They affirmed during the recent chat they will not be seeking donations.

What are their operating costs? Corporations have numerous, from filings fees to payroll; from web design to marketing. Many of these costs we can’t know and it would be futile to estimate. However, one cost we do know is the servers based on previous Pin Pics fundraisers.

In 2010 it was stated that the servers for one year cost $4,000.

Now the Disney pin trading world is simple not that big. According to DPF statistics, there are currently approximately 770 “active members†(and just under 3500 total members). I am going to assume these numbers are reflective of the users for Pin Pics.

Assuming that these numbers are somewhat reflective, there is somewhere around 800 active pin traders online. From here, we know a number of them will want the premium service and some percentage will not. For easy math let’s assume there are 200 active pin traders on line interested in the premium service. This would put the price point at $20.00 a year.

So here is my question: For $20.00 a year, what extra services beyond the current levels offered would you expect? So far descriptions for premium service have been “professional analysis and multiple Images†and “enamel engineering.â€

What would you want for this price point? What would you expect them to analyze? Currently there are just under 90,000 items in the database. Do you want multiple pictures of each item?

Would you be interested of being able to better tailor your trade requests? Exclude persons without going through the Pending Trades? Being ranked higher on the trading results requests? Some type of pre-ranking of pins (ie, these pins are my grails and I will trade anything for it vs. I will definitely not trade this pin for Hidden Mickey) to help filter out annoying pin requests?

A special forum for premium members? Better smart phone access? A valuation guide? Ad free surfing?

Other ideas?

Again this is not an attack on Lansam or its members. I am not interesting in hearing how Lansam or its owners are allegedly devaluing this hobby or just this side of sainthood. These positions have been well covered in the threads. I am interested in knowing what DPF members here (a target audience I am assuming) would want for this price point (or another price point you think is reasonable).

Sincerely yours,
kajtdd

Some type of pre-ranking of pins (ie, these pins are my grails and I will trade anything for it)

THIS, THIS, THIS!!! I've been wanting this type of feature for a really long time. It helps to know which pins I need to make a trade, instead of getting my hopes up to no avail.

I can't really think of anything/feature that would convince me to subscribe. If the "free" stuff goes away eventually, I'll learn to live without it I guess.

Maybe the ability to do user specific trades instead of pin specific trades. Maybe have one picture for free, and multiple pics/angles for paid service?

Its interesting at this point I owuoold crtainly be prepared to pay for it but what they are currently offering I would want unless they offered something along the lines already mentioned then I am staying free that is until I will eventually have to pay I am sure!

Better search feature.

What feature would be to better search for a specific pin so that when entered in 538 pin materialized instead of the ,let's say, 4 pins that would really match what your looking for?

Type "Pixar UP Ellie" and 16 pins pop up.
The only pins that for this example should be is 12 but only 10 resulted from the search that was really wanted:

Pin 70628: DSF - Disney-Pixar's Up - Ellie Badge - Surprise ReleaseG
Pin 72920: Disney Store Europe - Disney/Pixar's Up - Ellie Badge - Grape Soda Bottle Cap
Pin 74263: Ellie Badge Grape Soda Safety Pin - Up DVD Release
Pin 74902: DMR - Disney/Pixar's Up - Ellie Badge - Grape Soda Bottle Cap
Pin 79373: Disney-Pixar's Up - Ellie Badge
Pin 84433: WDCC - Grape Soda Pin
Pin 88819: DSF - Valentine's Day 2012 - Carl and Ellie - Kids
Pin 88820: DSF - Valentine's Day 2012 - Carl and Ellie - Wedding
Pin 88821: DSF - Valentine's Day 2012 - Carl and Ellie - Mailbox
Pin 88822: DSF - Valentine's Day 2012 - Carl and Ellie - Chairs

But did not even include these 2 ?????

Pin 78727: DisneyStore.com Up pin set
Pin 78742: DisneyStore.com Up Pin Set - Ellie as a Girl Only

Now type in "UP Ellie" and now you get 27 pins just because a pin released 5 years prior has the word "Cellier" in it.

Pin 27313: WDW - Mickey at Le Cellier Epcot

This is just a couple of examples but you see what I mean. Don't even look up an Ariel, Alice, Belle or stitch: see what you get as thier results.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the current search feature allows you to search all the words in the title and description-- therefore the bottom two pins do not show up because no where on the page for the pins does it have the word "Pixar." This could be remedied by commenting on it and asking it to be added for search purposes.

But this wouldn't be a paid feature...? it is just a general thing, if you just comment when you find something amiss they are usually very quick to update the pin listing. I don't do much in the way of adding pins but if I want to make something easier to search or give better information I will always take a few seconds to do so.

I don't know what would entice me to pay, if we are keeping all the same old features for free. I would definitely donate to help with server costs though, so I will probably just end up getting whatever it is regardless because it is just another way to raise money to run pinpics. Your statistics make it seem like there are not very many people around to pay in the first place, and you know not all of them will be donating.

I agree with this as "one thing" they could offer.

How about showing the picture of the pins when your in the process of requesting pins in the TA?

I don't mean to be rude but if it turns out that we all have to pay to use PinPics I will not be paying. Some of us are students who don't have the money to spare - buying pins is costly as it is.

They did say the core of PinPics would remain free. Additional services, like maybe more than 1 picture, advanced trade functions, etc. might be by subscription service, paid fee once a year, etc. That is what we are discussing here, what features would entice us for a premium membership.

I would not be happy, if multiple pictures is a premium upgrade. You can't say you are committed to helping traders avoid scrappers and then make them pay for the best weapon we have in the arsenal (more and better pictures). Avoiding scrappers shouldn't be a "pay to play" proposition.

I'd pay just so Pinpics has a better webdesign :X It's design and navigation have always bugged me.

Features I'd like would be maybe something like a live one on one chat with traders ala facebook? Maybe something where you could instantly talk to someone so you don't waste your time emailing people, waiting for a reply, etc.

The one Premium feature for which I would actually pay would be the ability to easily export an entire collection list to Excel or some other standard listing format. That way I would have the ability to create a personal backup copy of my collection. I know there are ways of doing that today, but a Premium membership would allow the use of an Export type function that would make it as easy as the push of a button and a selection of format.

I don't mind paying for Pin Pics. I use it every day.

+1

As it has been pointed out... The cost of "hosting" Pinpics is not free to the owners...

As an occasional pin trader, I love having Pinpics (and these Pin Forums too) at my beckon call.
And I do not want to see it (or the forums) go away.

For someone to want to better Pinpics (especially after this volatile week :anxious:), I am happy to support them with a paid membership.

Hmm, some features that I can think of;

1. Prioritize wants/tag grails
2. Notifications - for example, when a person adds one of the pins I want to be notified about to their trades list
3. Flexibility with trade requests - for example, being able to state clearly that I am willing to offer multiple pins for 1 or being able to send requests to a specific person
4. Block list
5. Pending list - I always leave pins on my wants list till I get the actual pin in hand. It would be nice to be able to move them to a pending list for tracking and so that I don't get requests for them
6. Create lists - for example, I would like to have the option to easily print separate lists for Stitch and Mystery Stamp pins I want and have the ability to include certain info like trading/wants ratio
7. iPhone app/mobile friendly version of the site

That's all I can think of right now but really, I feel lucky that we have/can use PincPics for free already so any improvements or additional features I would pay for if the price is reasonable.

WOW!!! Love this!!!

If they came out with an iPhone app, I would definitely be willing to pay for that. Can you imagine how useful that would be when you're in the park or at a trading event? While I do hope they keep the current features free, I could see how multiple views on a pin could merit an additional cost. However, if there is a scrapper version of a pin, multiple angles of that pin should not cost more. As we are all trying to avoid these little guys, it would be helpful to the pin community to not have to pay for multiple angles of fake pins. We all want to know what they look like and how to avoid them. The same goes with a more advanced trade assistant. Depending on the price, I might be willing to spare some change for these features. Oh, and for them to finally get rid of the "coolest" feature they have on the site! That little thing has bugged me for some time.

I agree with all of these!

I would not pay to use Pinpics unless I started a new collection. First of all LANSAM said the "core" of Pinpics would be free, what does the core mean? To catalog your wants, owns, traders? To still use the TA as it is today? I don't turn on the TA because most of my wants are harder pins and the requests I get are not not fair trades. If some sort of phone app was made that would be great, but others have already tried it and the Apple store will only make it a free app. JMHO.

I would like these too.

The phone app was done by someone before, but Disney did not allow it to be sold it seems :(

I love luvsulley's idea, 5. Pending list - I always leave pins on my wants list till I get the actual pin in hand. It would be nice to be able to move them to a pending list for tracking and so that I don't get requests for them.

I try to keep a recipe size box of all of the people I have traded with, and who is "pending." It would be nice to have a place to do this within the system to help organize me. I am always so paranoid that I will forget something-lol!

I'd also like to be able to prioritize pins that I want and make pin groups within my wants list to help me track better. For example, I'd love to make a list of just Valentine Pluto pins without haveing to make a seperate list outside of my "wants list."
