So... I was at DLR the other day.

I thought I would stop by the Pin Trader's Booth in DTD.
I went over and I was looking at some of the new pins.
Sadly I hadn't brought my Pins with me that day! 🙁

Anyway, I was inside the main area next to the registers when a couple came over to the cashier.
They asked if they could trade, and the cashier OBVIOUSLY said yes! HAHA

So the woman reached into her purse and pulled out a Brand New Countdown to the Millennium Pin. In the original wrapper and everything.
She took it out of the bag and gave it to the Cast Member.
The cast member asked, "Are you sure?" She replied, "Yeah! I don't need it!"
Then the cast member gave her the pin and took hers. Then the couple walked away.

Now that whole thing wasn't alarming or anything, the next thing was!

So then, the Cashier called over another worker to look at the pin.
She looked at it and they started discussing how the pin was a REALLY good pin!
It was the Alice in Wonderland Pin from that set by the way.
So the cast members looked at each other. Then... The cashier took it off her Hip Lanyard and stuck it in her pocket!

Now I was just wondering, are Cast Members allowed to do that? Is that why we can never find any good pins on lanyards?
Please let me know what you guys think! Thank you!
 
I've heard cast members do this and replace one of their personal pins with it.

Not sure on the rules but that came from a cast members lips.

I've never seen that happen, but I have traded with a few cast members who carry their own personal traders to trade. I hope this doesn't happen to often though. I can see how it would be an unfair advantage for them!
 
Woah! That's crazy!
One time I traded one of the alphabet HMs with a CM, and she put the pin way up at the top of her lanyard, hidden by all her hair!

These CMs think that they are slick!... HA!
 
Ive seen castmates with pins in their pockets, but when I say thanks for letting me see their pins, and they ask what pins Im looking for, they pull them out of their pocket.

I know some hide harder to find pins like princesses and well, Stitch for one, but what you said I find it hard to be the same thing.

Since the cashier knew how valuable the pin was. More than likely, it will end up on ebay 😛
 
Last month, I had a CM at Saratoga Springs Resort, come right out and tell me that she took good pins off her lanyard for herself all the time. I was shocked actually... She then proceeded to try and bribe me to get her pins at the Pin Release Event, because she was going to be working and couldn't get to it.... Sheesh
 
The latest I have seen of pins backwards on CM lanyards is that they were one of two things. 1. It was a duplicate that they traded for and didn't realize it until after the trade, 2. I have had CM's tell me they are mystery pins. You can trade for a pin if you want to but you don't get to see it until after the trade. Of that I have yet to get a good pin out of it, just an old HM of scrapper, so I am leery of that now. Though I think you can turn down the trade.

I don't know if it is against the rules, but I have gotten LE's off of lanyards before. Real ones at that, though nothing HTF. I think it would depend on the CM as many wear lanyards, but not traders or collectors.

Though on the other side of the CM lanyards I have seen a lead explaining pin trading to a guest family. He called another CM over to show them another type of lanyard (hip style) and noticed that one of his pins was a counterfeit. He promptly removed the pin from the CM's lanyard and threw it straight into the trash stating that he had a bad pin.

So it goes both ways for sure.
 
They're not supposed to trade with themselves while on the job. I have traded with a working cast member from his personal collection because he fancied one of my scar pins so I traded it to him if he had a way to keep it for himself rather than leaving it on the lanyard to taunt him all day. He pulled out a small coin purse filled with pins, unlike the zip locks used to refill pin boards, so I'm guessing it was his own pins.

Ive heard they take missing pins out of their paycheck but idk how they keep track if they takeoff scrappers when they're pointed out.

All in all, I guess some CMs can't resist when they see a good pin. :/
 
I must admit when I was a cast member in 2005/2006 I did do this from time to time if it was a pin a liked. I did refrain from taking alot of pins bc 1. Many of the pins on the lanyard at Pizza Port flight deck (aka. greeter/crowd control person) were not that great.... I think I may have only taken 3 to 5 at the most during the entire time I worked at Pizza Port. 2. These pins weren't crazy valuable either; just some hidden mickey pins and 1 Dale pin. I also refrained bc the lanyard would prolly be empty or close to it if I had kept doing that XD I don't think my manager/lead noticed or seemed to mind...
When I worked in the French Market during my time at DLR when the manager was working he always allowed me to have some pins if I asked/liked them. He knew I was a pin collector and was really cool about it and even asked me "Do you see anything you like?" when he saw me and just gave me the pin(s) if I did, no trading required.

Idk if cast members are allowed to do this... I'm thinking prolly not, but then again I think it depends on the cast member/leads in charge. I don't think this is the reason why pins on CM lanyards are crummy these days I think it's bc of all the scrappers/fakes out there and CMs not caring/knowing about it. Most of them could care less and I think it's even worse with the scrapper/counterfeit epidemic there now bc some traders knowingly use scrappers w/ CM lanyards. Back in 2005/2006 counterfeits were verrrry easy to identify (these were the cheapy cheapy ones from Mexico of very poor quality in both metal and color), but CMs I worked w/ didn't care (even though they tried to train us about it and fakes were BLATANTLY obvious) and there were some days where the Pizza Port lanyard would come back at the end of the night w/ all fake pins (in the morning the pins had started out being all real pins).

It's crazy too bc now I see how that not caring has affected pin trading lanyards at the park. I was pin traders at DTD tonight trying to trade (I'm pretty sure I got two scrappers despite being careful and examining the pins :facepalm: ) and when I completed the trade w/ a CM she proceeded to tell me the pin I gave her was pretty and asked if it was fake ::shakes head:: I told her no, but I was thinking in my head, "She should know this info at least and wth would she take it if she knew it was fake?" I disagree with the whole idea of CMs taking pins regardless of being fake or not bc they can't say no, in 2005 when I was trained we were told to tell guests no to pins if I knew for a fact that they were fake (and I did on a couple of occasions). Although I must admit these days it's very hard to tell scrappers/fakes on lanyards these days even with the info here on DPF, unless u have the real pin in front of u 🙁
 
Technically speaking, had the CM been caught, they would have just got a point given on their record, nothing more. When I was a CM, our supervisor told us to never trade amongst ourselves on stage, either backstage or the breakroom. My fellow CM's were always trading amongst themselves either for good pins to trafe with guests or for their own personal traders.
 
They used to do that with LE's. You had to trade another LE to get it.

I never encountered that, that was nevera Disney pin trading rule. I remember a long time ago at PTNs they'd have a trade board *game* that was LE for LE only, but that's it. My experience has been pretty much the same as Phoenix's: The CM has a duplicate pin (usually because they let a little kid trade with them even though the CM had the pin on the lanyard already), or it's a "mystery" pin and you can't see it unless you trade for it.

CMs aren't supposed to pull pins off lanyards for themselves or their friends, but it happens a lot.
 
I have been told a few times for when people would go into the UK stores to trade cast members were not allowed to trade off lanyards until they were on a break or off work.
 
There is no rule on this. The only rules that the company tell you are this

1) you must always trade unless you know it's fake damaged or a custom pin

2) always have 12

3) when you check out a lanyard it must be returned with the same amount.


when I worked attractions we all did this we saw a pin and we would keep it than buy one later to replace it, I would give pins away no one is there to regulate the pins because managers have better things to do with there time.
 
I am not surprised I was at DLR at the Big Thunder Jamboree and three female cast members were discussing how mad they were cuz someone brought out the trade BOOK and also told a few guest they were bringing it out so there was already a line Saying if there was no line they would have went through the book and taken the good pins.... ARE YOU SERIOUS!
