We all have them. Pins that aren't part of our main collection, but that somehow mean more to us than anything else.

Alright everyone, hop aboard your time machine (it's rotating backwards for your descent to earth) for a epic (re: why is this post so damn long?!) post that is equal parts lore, desperation, and downright frustration around a grail that keeps me up at night. And this is long. And I am not sorry. Haha.

The year is 1981. I don't exist yet. But my mom does, and she is working for Bell Labs in New Jersey. Her work experience up until that point involved programing and coding kiosk computer systems, not the least of which were many of the Bank of New York ATM kiosks installed in New York City in the late 70s. At Bell Labs, she was a networking specialist. Her work experience and value in the industry afforded her the opportunity to be hand picked to join the Bell Systems team that would be responsible for laying networking around Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, and specifically, to install all of the World Key informational kiosks around the park. Growing up in New York in a "Disney Family" that obsessively visited the World's Fair, you can imagine how honored and excited my mother (and my grandmother) was for this opportunity to be a part of something so big and so important.

She was given a handful of special items from EPCOT's opening, but mostly from Bell Systems, as she was never "officially" a Disney Cast Member. Moreover, she reminisces about how chaotic and BUSY it was getting everything in working order, and how she hardly remembers the day due to running around like a crazy woman and sweating more than she ever had in her life. Any celebrating or "swag" that would have been given out she would have long missed due to the crazy hours she spent installing, patching and testing the network in and around Communicore.

One of the most unexpected and emotional moments in my life came last year when we attended the D23 EPCOT 30th Anniversary Celebration. We were treated to vintage videos, photographs and interviews from the park opening, and as we were perusing some of the setup, I was stunned to find unmistakable photos of my mom and her team with the World Key kiosks. To know that my mother had a direct hand in opening such a special and revolutionary type of theme park made me prouder than I'd ever felt in my whole life.

Okay, enough of that - where am I going with this?

A few months ago as I was perusing PinPics, this caught my eye:

Pin 98008: Spaceship Earth Epcot Center Bell System Cast Member Sponsor Pin

Honestly, the pin itself is nothing special but what it means to me is another story entirely. This was the pin Cast Members wore on their costumes when Bell Systems was the sponsor of Spaceship Earth. Due to some questionable business practices (*ahem*) Bell Systems ended up breaking up, allowing for AT&T to take over as sponsor for the "New Global Neighborhood" of Spaceship Earth and Siemens after that. Immediately upon finding this pin, I took to eBay and was able to grab one of the vintage AT&T logo costume pins, but no matter how many saved searches I conduct or alerts I receive, I can never, ever find this pin.

How do people find these? Someone suggested reaching out to central Florida's consignment, vintage and tag shops. But is there another way? We are a big community of pin people, and I know that people stumble upon vintage Disneyland pins, security badges, name tags and other oddities not necessarily considered "trading" pins. I know this is a shot in the dark, but I am at my wits end and I know there has to be a better way to look for this...

I have to tell you, I would do nearly anything to get this pin for my mom. I find it all too fitting that EPCOT's big identity is around "legacy" and the message that we are leaving behind for generations to come. I consider this park, especially Spaceship Earth, to be a big part of my family's legacy, because it's something that I gush about and I am so proud of my mom's involvement in.

Thanks for reading, and hopefully sharing! Isn't it funny the value we each put on such strange and random pins?

I would try Theme Park Connection. They have a massive collection of vintage Disney stuff, and a huge Disney pin wall. If anyone is bound to have this pin, it will be them. Also check Craigslist. I've found several pieces for my collection at both places:

I guess this would be my "odd ball" grail pin:

pin13428

Pin 13428: Flubber Question Mark

This is so awesome and totally random. I like it a lot! :)

And thanks for the recommendations, guys. My brother lives in Orlando so I have him check Craigslist every now and again, and I LOVE Theme Park Connection -- not sure why I never thought to check with them! Hooray, leads! :D

I have an oddball grail and I have loved this pin the first time I set eyes on it.

pin47039

Pin 47039: WDW - Celebrating Fifty Years (Ice Cream Ear Hat) Jumbo

Every time I go to WDW, I have to get at least one of these treats. They are my absolute favorite snack. :) And who can't resist a cute Minnie and Mickey pin enjoying my favorite treat :)

my oddball grail is Pin 45735: Disney Auctions - DLR (LE 50 Gold Edition)
Framed Map & Pins (Peter and the Wolf)

I collect Peter & the Wolf, and only need 3 more pins. none of them are highly desired, but none have many trading, either. I collect Dumbo pins for my daughter, and these Peter & the Wolf are kind of like... a hope chest for my next baby. I really love Peter & the Wolf and try to catch a performance whenever the symphony does one. at LE50 and with only one anonymous person trading... I am afraid my odds of getting it arent great.

That is a cool pin lost-sun-princess, I hope one finds it's way to you!

I can't say I really have an oddball grail... I really don't even have an oddball want. All of the pins fit neatly into one of my themes I collect.
However, I do have an oddball own that I guess you could call grail-esque. It does not fit my collection, but since it was the result of my first trade with Scoop, it will be a permanent part of my collection.

oddball grail... Well, i collect some oddball stuff, lol. With that said, one of the pins out there I want for my HoND collection is rather odd. It is a Brooch style pin, of Esmeralda in a hinged stained glass window. It is currently on ebay from a UK seller, but the price with shipping is outside my budget.

NOT a grail, but definately one of those, "I want this!" pins.

Wow such a great story! I really hope you find that pin. Its great to have pins with a personal story behind them!

Some people have such great oddball grails! gonna have to give some thought to what might be mine! lol

Not sure if its a GRAIL perhaps, but its definitely a pin I want that isn't in my normal collections and that would fit absolutely no where except in my heart!!

pin15807th200

This. Short. Was my childhood. I don't know WHY I was so obsessed with it, but I was. I had this VHS tape of Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts, and I would watch this segment over and over and over again. I just love this darned seal!! I think the way it messes with Mickey is just too adorable.

When I was on the Disney Magical Express bus on my last trip to Disney World, a part of this short came up and I started crying. I am a dork! I guess I just have a lot of nostalgia tied up in this Mickey and the seal short film!

When I saw this pin I was like, "oh my gosh," and I actually chuckled to myself! I am sure I can manage to get it if I try hard enough, looking at those t/w ratios! Its not even that rare haha

Tony.thats mine too as Robbie watches Flubber all the time

I think it's a really cool pin but with only one person trading it I haven't been able to get a trade for it yet.

See Judy....great minds think alike!! :naughty:

I really like this pin also and I would consider it another one of my odd ball grails.

pin71676

Pin 71676: Haunted Mansion® O'Pin House - Boxed Set - Corridor of Doors - Door Knocker Only

To the OP, have you tried contacting Bell Systems collectors? They probably have forums, boards, ect as well. Just a thought.

The LE 50 Jessica Rabbit as a ballerina is "oddball." Since I dance ballet, I'd like to create a ballet board someday, and there's no doubt in my mind that it will be beyond difficult to get that one.

I did not know that such collectors existed! I will definitely investigate, thank you for the idea!

Great pins, everyone!! :D This is fun seeing what everyone is after apart from the normal, big collections we all love!

I don't collect Jessica, but one day I hope to own this one:

pin76595

My mom took me to see Gone with the Wind in the theater when it was re-released briefly (I was in 7th grade). I absolutely adored it, and went on to read the book and dressing up as Scarlett for Halloween. :)

My oddball grail pin:

pin39460

I don't collect Herbie/The Love Bug, but 53 has always been my lucky number. Since I was very young.

I don't remember why it first became being my lucky number, but it took on an extra-special significance to me after my father died when I was a teenager, because I realized that 53 was also his birth year (1953).

Unfortunately, this pin is ridiculously hard to get! I wouldn't think it's a super-coveted pin, since I don't know of a single person who collects the Love Bug... but it always only has only 0 or 1 trading on PinPics. Oh well.

My oddball pin would be
pin25447
. I already own this pin, but it just speaks to me >^..^<

I don't collect Stitch, but this pin has always "spoken" to me as well. :) I keep adding it to my wants list and then taking it off. On one hand, I love it and would love to own it, but on the other hand, I wouldn't want to take it away from diehard Stitch collectors! :-D

This is my oddball grail as well :). Its my moms all time favorite movie. lol In fact she loved the movie so much my named me Katie Scarlett after the main character in the film Katie Scarlett O'hara. It makes for some funny looks from some people who see my ID and know the movie

Ressurrected thread is resurrected!! I'm so glad more people are posting their weird, doesn't-quite-fit-in-with-their-collections grails! Maybe some good can come of this thread and someone somewhere can help one of us out!! :hsd: Keep 'em coming, guys!!
