Y'all look what I just found on IG.... what a deal*wink wink*, 5 DEC princess pins for only 2200 bucks.... So I have to ask, what's the max any of you would pay for a pin?

Honestly, probably only about 100.00.
Somehow, I just can't seem to justify higher than that. In fact, the most I have ever paid for a pin was 85.99.

I feel pretty similar, I could only ever justify around 65 dollars lol. My plan on getting the rare stuff relies on LE pickups as traders

The most I spent was $600 for the BATB Masterpiece pin, but that came with about 10-15 other pins. Which reminds me, I need to go post the pictures I took yesterday!

I try for about $6 CAD per pin (about $4.50 USD). I just can't justify the exchange and shipping together at this moment. Sure I'm not getting WDI or LE pins for this price, but I haven't paid more than $24 CAD ($18 USD) for a pin and that was when I was picking up LE's in the parks.
 
Lol yeah realistically I've never paid more than 28 or so bucks for a pin and usually around 4 for a ebay pin that I'm confident is authentic but I'm sure if I found a grail I'd go higher...

I paid $100 for a pin, once. It was the DSSH Olaf from their first Frozen release. I bought it because a friend was selling it, and it happened when I found out about my Mom's cancer, and I just wanted something positive. And now, 5 years later, that pin is going for like $30. Same reason why I spent what I did on the Frozen WDI Snowflake set & Jumbo when @starry_solo sold hers. I don't think those have held their value either, although the Jumbo is okay. I just wanted them at the time for purely emotional reasons. I have a couple that I paid in the $75 range (Beloved Tales and vintage Figments). When pin trading first started, I put a $35 limit on my purchases. About 5 years ago, I decided to bump that limit up to $50 figuring with inflation, it is pretty equal. But anything more than $40 and I find myself getting pretty squirrly. It has to be really special.

DH and I have talked about how come I have no problem spending $300 or even $400 on a LEGO set (we have the Disney Castle) but I won't do it for pins. I just start thinking about airfare and hotels and the places I could go instead. And wondering about the type of worker and working conditions to make all of these in the first place, and how little Disney pays to have them made. We know these are cheaply made trinkets. To turn around and give some "dealer" hundreds of dollars for them, I just can't. I don't care if there are only 100 in the entire world! It just feels like crossing some sort of sanity line.

I kinda agree with what @hopemax said. I have a hard time spending $$$ on Mulan pins, but for BATB for sis, I will, I have no idea why?!
But thanks again for buying the WDI Frozen Snowflake & Jumbo set! The price you paid was the price I paid...sadly no contacts at WDI to get me pins for retail :( I am hoping that sis & I won't be so much into pins in our retirement, but who knows?!
 
I once paid $400 for a pin BUT I had just sold over $250 in pins and had a gift card for $100 so I only paid $50 from my account.

I try to stick to below $50 for one pin.
 
I think the most I've ever paid for one pin is $65. I'd say my average over the six years(!) I've been collecting is probably around $20 per pin. I've tightened the lid on my pin spending this calendar year, so now $25 (including shipping) is my hard limit. With the way prices have been going, that has slowed my pin purchasing considerably.

I have also given up buying traders. The Mulan pins I don't have (older pins and recent WDI/DEC) are impossible to trade for with any pin I have access to.
 
When I started collecting, I didn’t think there was any way I’d ever pay over $25 for a little piece of metal.

Now, after seven years of collecting, I’m lucky to find any pin off of my wants list for that price.

I’ve paid up to $75 for a grail (an LE 100 Peter Pan), and I would consider going up to $100 for one of my most wanted pins. Unfortunately most of my grails are worth even more than that now.

I’ve paid $100+ for a jumbo or framed pin. I try not to spend more than double the original cost. Sometime that is too much for me and other times it’s not. (I depends on the pin :D). I did pay ~$60 for the Mulan Disney Girls R/C pin last year. I bought a grail last year for just under $50 (Artist Choice Belle and Beast Spectacle of Pins). It was technically more than double the original price but it was my most sought after pin for the longest time. A few years ago (2016) I passed on buying the Gaston WDI villains profile for $60 when it first released because I didn’t think it was worth it. (I still don’t think it is worth what it is selling for now.) However, I think I would buy it today for $60 if I knew it was real. ;)

Most of my really nice “high end” WDI, shopping, or Auctions pins were purchased in 2016 or prior to 2016 when I felt prices were more reasonable. I buy more park release and mystery sets now. However, I have been able to acquire some nice newer pins at reasonable prices with some patience and help (mainly DPF help). Sometimes prices drop and other times they explode.

I stay within my monthly pin budget whether it’s one big purchase or lots of smaller ones. I have friends who go to the casinos around me and drop $100 at the tables while I spend no more than $20 at the slots in one night out. They don’t get why I love Disney pins and I can’t understand their spending. We both value the experience or item differently.

PS I don’t have kids to feed so I have more disposable income now. :p
 
I paid $400 for a Super jumbo and it is probably the last time I can see getting it below $500(Scoop Sanderson What's Happining) in this market, I have had to part with it and prices have significantly skyrocketed...
 
The most I have ever paid for a pin was about $75, for a very rare Roger Rabbit pin, but I also got a few smaller pins with it. I can't and will never pay anymore than $75 for a pin (depending on how often I do or do not see it). I see pins skyrocket in price minutes after release and I never understand why people give in to such demand. For example the WDI Profiles and their God-awful ridiculous mark up. I still don't quite understand the hype for those things. I'm patiently waiting for that bubble to burst because it's only a matter of time now, and I can watch how far those pins drop in price. The crooked trade ratio of those things also hurt the pin market, in that it makes a lot of higher end pins (and in my opinion better looking pins) drop in value because everyone is chasing profiles. I will never justify paying someone (WHO SHOULDN'T BE SELLING CM EXCLUSIVE MERCHANDISE TO BEGIN WITH IF THEY'RE A CM) $200 over retail price for a pin that's a hot ticket, or at least for now. Like I tell myself everytime I want to splurge on pins "It's metal. You don't need it. Think of the vacations you could go on with that money."

The most I have ever spent on one individual pin was, I think...$225? $250? Something around there. I have a handful of pins that I've paid over $100 for, but they were all incredibly rare/older pins (mostly Robin Hoods, which keep their value surprisingly well over the years).

For new pins, I pretty much have my limit set at around $30-$35 per pin, unless it's a jumbo or part of an event that you need to pay to enter. I have my limit set to that since many new pins that come out for my collections are from Shanghai/Tokyo/Hong Kong, so it costs a bit more to get them here.
 
When I started seriously (rather than just casually) collecting pins many years ago, I thought "I'll never pay more than $25 for a pin!" And now that's retail. :p And after some time in the hobby, I thought "I'll never spend $100 on a pin"... and yeah, that's way behind in the rearview mirror. :p And then I accepted that I wanted to be a completist in my theme and that was gonna require $$$$. So while other folks go out to the movies ($18 or so a ticket) or dinner ($25-$50 not including drinks) or have their once or twice daily Starbucks ($7-$10/day) or go to concerts ($100-$500 ticket), I do my best to keep up on pins. And while other folks may be happy with their experiences or meals or drinks, I have the pins to show for the money I've spent and they have eaten or drank their expenses or have videos on their phones to show where they've been. Each to their own. My pins make me happy so that's where my spending $ goes. :)
 
When I first started I was doing star wars spent no more then retail on them. Then I met my future wife and she got me all into stitch. So now with stitch we got pretty deep where I have over 300 different pins of just stitch. I've spent different amounts the most is prob 400 which was the profile of stitch. We are the point where we only spend more then 100 if the stitch is very rare. I'm lucky there isnt many stitch with the frog pins otherwise I'd be spending way more for those hahaa. I always try to trade first before considering buying.
 
Update on those princess DEC pins. I just saw an OPP for one of them, you're not likely to get one at all with 15 spots. Each spot cost 50 dollars. 50 dollars for a 1/15 chance, but somebody spent a hundred for a 2/15 chance

I think like other people have expressed emotion has a lot to do with it.

For me I’m more willing to spend more if it’s for my mom than for myself because her collection is really something that our entire family has enjoyed and has a lot of memories in it. :)

Pre-fire collecting, I would have pins in my personal collection and sometimes rationalize going after an expensive one by trading/selling others that I had enjoyed for a while. Post-fire, I find it more difficult to ever considering weeding out the collection. So my personal pin budget has definitely decreased. My activity might pick up more once we are home again, but for now I’m just adding a few special ones as they come within means. ^.^

So my pin budget tip would be to not let the hype pull you into pressing the buy it now on an amount you will regret, and appreciate that even if prices don’t go down for that pin that another great one is probably in the making.

BUT if emotion drives your pin budget up a little more because of something going on, don’t beat yourself up. In the end the best way to prove money doesn’t matter is to get rid of it as fast as we can, right? ;D
