During efforts to update new pin databases (pintradingdb.com and collectiblepintrader.com), I have observed confusion regarding Funko and LoungeFly. Perhaps it is only confusion on my part (definitely would not be the first), thus I am requesting DPF member help to unconfuse (is that a word? spell check is not liking it at all) me. Your input will provide a direct assist to better list future Funko pins in the databases (currently planning to add the adorable new Funko Avengers Endgame mystery pin set. May be seen here: Trading: - Funko Avengers Endgame Blind Box Trading)

What are we discussing?
Funko POP! pins. These are pins created in the same vein as Funko POP! vinyl characters. Key characteristics are cuteness, big round eyes, and square heads bigger than body.
Some examples:
- Pin# 131805, Loungefly - Funko Pop! Alice, Hedge Hog and Queen of Hearts
- Pin# 131810, Loungefly - Funko Pop! Stitch Alien Suit
- Pin# 132667, Loungefly - Funko Pop! Mickey Mouse 90TH Collection

The question to vote on at top of this thread:
Are Funko pins manufactured by Loungefly in conjunction with Funko, only by Funko brand with no involvement by Loungefly, or what is the relationship if any?

Discussion:
Please post your key observations on this interesting and enthralling topic below.

Up to two selections may be made in list above.
This poll will end in 14 days or approximately 17Aug2019. :)

I guess I’m confused too. Are you polling to find out what our perceptions are regarding the companies? I mean, if you’re really wanting to know if there’s a true relationship or not, here’s a link below with some info on them. ;) I’ll put it in a spoiler tag to not influence votes.

Funko is the parent company. Funko purchased Loungefly a few years back.

So it's essentially "Disney and Marvel" or "Disney and Lucasfilm" or "Disney and whatever Disney purchases next." (ex. if Disney does eventually buy Mattel or Hasbro like they sort of want to do). It's not exactly the same since Loungefly is manufacturing and Disney doesn't have that yet. But to define the relationship.

IMO, all the pins manufactured by Loungefly should say so somewhere. Additionally, the ones that look like Funko POP! should also say that. I don't think we need to put Funko in all the pin names, because we wouldn't do that with all Disney pins, it's redundant. But "Funko POP!" is a Brand and means something specific to a general audience.

More of the confusion I see is whether to call them Loungefly pins or Box Lunch pins. In that case, I think it should be Loungefly and then in a FAQ somewhere have the "Where can I buy Loungefly pins? Answer Hot Topic and Box Lunch, but eventually there may be more locations (Disney is carrying a lot more Loungefly items directly, and maybe they will farm out some pin stuff to, who knows). Jerry Leigh pins didn't get called "Walmart Pins" in the database just because that was the most common place people bought them. Same for Monogram pins.

Excellent info @krand1276 and @hopemax ! Thank you!

So... with this info... when adding a pin into a pin database, should Funko Pop! be a stand alone brand for a pin with the Funko Pop! logo on the packaging and pin listing should have no reference to LoungeFly since it is not branded on same packaging?

Example leading to my confusion:

  • Avengers posted description here stating "This collection is a BoxLunch Exclusive! Create by Loungefly.": Trading: - Funko Avengers Endgame Blind Box Trading
  • Versus the actual packaging that says nothing about the Avengers pins being created by Loungefly and only says 'Funko' and 'Pop!' (see pictures below)
Do blogs or other traders know something I do not which makes them include in their description "create[d] by Loungefly?

Isn't Funko Pop! a better brand to use for this style of pins? Funko Pop! lends more clarity to the description and LoungeFly lends confusion? What are the thoughts of DPF members?

I had never looked at the packaging on the Funko POP! pins before, and had assumed that they would have said Loungefly somewhere. But yes, after looking at the packaging, I would consider Loungefly and Funko POP! as two different brands and listings should only refer to the one actually shown on the packaging.

Love the feedback! Thank you.

Yeah none of the vote options are what I would choose, but all the feedback that has been posted in here makes sense.
I think Funko should be listed on the POP! style pins, or if the pin's packaging says Funko.
I think it should say Loungefly if the package only says Loungefly.

Although I'm not opposed to just a small blerb added along the lines of "Funko is the parent company of Loungefly" maybe? I do think they should be called Loungefly pins, and not Box Lunch pins, but should be noted in the description "These pins are typically found at Box Lunch and Hot Topic stores" since there has been some overlap with the designs being found at either shop.

Here is another question. Does Funko ever do pins not of their Pop! Line? I cannot recall seeing Funko without Pop!

They did release a Tomorrowland logo pin when that film came out. So far they have only release POP style pins, but Funko does have other figures, tho arguably the POPs are most popular. They do Dorbz, Rock Candy, the mystery mini blind box figures have their own style, just no pins for those... YET
