This seems to be the case, yes.

But then how could that be substantiated? I guess until the bidder actually wins, it is presumed that the pin is owned by the bidder? That seems even shadier.

Agreed... I guess we will learn something today... Education is good.
Really was only trying to have fun. I think it is fun to help others gain the pins they want. I enjoyed getting you (Spu175psu) your Gaston Grail and I know wsb would love the batb pin so I just wanted to give her the final push for a real chance... CanaDaLE could still pick either bid... They are pretty even. Anyway... I find it fun to pitch in, but should probably learn to 'pitch out' (is that a thing?)

I've seen this done before but dont remember the logistics.

I do recall that before this year's auction changes, people did "auction zaps" but I guess I forgot that it was changed the new rules (tbh I still haven't re-read them lol). It was definitely an intense auction in any case!

I remember being on the other end of two of those "auction zaps" already. It's not a fun position to be in.

But anyway, I don't want this to be drawn out any more than it needs to be. Although, I do believe that there should be a rule change, since no one wants to feel excluded and I don't believe we go on DPF to feel excluded, I will (hopefully) make it a little easier on everyone and concede. Congratulations, @watzshakinbacon!

Thanks for running a great game, @CanaDaLE! My book and PODH pins will be ready for the next one!

Not to throw fuel on the fire (a mod needs to weigh in on the rules) BUT ... from memory, the "old" rules had advised that if you wanted to add a bid to someone else's (to help them win), you were *supposed* to contact the bidder privately and make your offer, and then the original bidder was *supposed* to post a new bid that included ALL pins he/she/it was offering (including zaps). I think mostly to ensure that there were no hard feelings. I'd say 99% of us, myself included, regularly failed on the "contact privately" part and would just make a post saying, "I'll add this to So-and-So's bid!!!" for all to see.

The new rules don't say ANYTHING about this, either way, so clarification is needed. If people wheel-and-deal behind the scenes, I don't see how anyone would know the difference (unless this place becomes like FB, where nothing is truly private, HA). But if "helping" to bid is no longer allowed/acceptable, every single one of us needs to be clear on that. I know I wouldn't have thought anything of adding to someone's bid IF I had anything that would be helpful (not necessarily in this auction, just in general).

we just need to settle this the most logical way ... Medieval Times battle !

YAY 😀 Now, I really can focus on writing my thesis haha

Thank you, Tina, for an awesome series of auction! I know it was difficult position, but I'm grateful to be a runner up.

YAY! BATB GRAIL ACHIEVED!!!
Can you wait till I'm there in May or would you like me to mail it out?

I think we need to ask @starry_solo for some clarification, because I just reread the rules and I see no rules regarding a "zap" to help someone bid

I am here and discussing it with the other moderators. I don't recall an actual rule where someone couldn't add to someone else's bid, only that the pin to be auctioned had to be in the possession of the auctioneer and no cash could exchange hands.

Please see this thread: Trade Auction Rules effective January 1, 2018

Specifically (and I have underlined and bolded the relevant part):

3. All items auctioned must be in hand. This means that the auctioneer has to have it in their possession before beginning the auction. Pictures of the front and back of the pin that is being auctioned shall be posted and any flaws must be described. Bidders must have pins they bid in hand and describe any flaws. It is up to the auctioneer to ask for a picture of the pin if they so choose.

This rule change came about to prevent the double standard of requiring the auctioneers to have the pin(s) in their physical possession but not imposing the same restriction on the bidders. Accordingly, the 'helping' of bidding is acceptable only as long as the bidder (and not the helpers) will have the pin(s) in hand by the close of the auction. If the bidder will NOT have the offered pin(s) in hand by the close of the auction, they CANNOT be offered as part of a bid (so please keep that in mind before offering to help someone win an auction).
