Hello all, I am currently at wdw with my wife and 2 1/2 year old daughter and started a collection to commemorate her first visit. As a start up I purchased for her a collection of Disney baby pins. I searched threads for beginners, but came up empty... Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks!

edit: I did find a nice beginners thread after doing some digging.... But anyway hung else I shiuld know would still be great!

Hi and welcome to the community. :wavey:

The one thing I wish had done when first I started collecting was to have kept a ledger, listing what i spent and when/where/how I acquired each pin. I can look at them as a whole and say "wow that was a lot of hard work, money, etc, etc" but it'd be kinda neat to look back and see how much I spent or how much of my acquisition were buys vs trade. But it's just a thought and definitely not something everyone would want to do. :)

My kids like to trade for what they like, then they trade again. Sometimes the same pin for another one they
like. They enjoy the exchange a lot. I'm sure you know that Cast Members have to trade with you. In the
stores, there are little trading boards and other items where trading pins are kept for trading.
If you ask they will show them to you. Enjoy yourself and your kids. That is one of the great parts of
pin trading!

Hello
Welcome to the wonderful world of pin trading :)
When you're just beginning I'd say just go with what catches your eye , limited edition pins are great for trading with other collectors but a booster pack of pins will do for Cast Member trading so just pick up whatever's on sale for that .
I'd also recommend not bothering to buy a pin bag from WDW , if you decide you want one they're much cheaper online but I suspect you'll want to display them somewhere at home (frame them perhaps) .

Thanks for all the suggestions.... I tried to have my daughter do some trading, but she doesn't get the concept of giving to get.... She didn't want to give up any of her pins... So maybe next year... I did buy her a new pin... It was a blue package that had tinker bell and said 2015 so we can see when she started... I'll def. Start keeping a list though thanks. And as for storing them I will probably just keep them on her lanyard for now... Then we'll see. Maybe in the future I'll frame them...

Best tip:

Find what you like, what you wanna collect and DON'T be a completest! It's funner that way. Work towards a few pins you really like and go from there.

For the kids You should take a picture each time you go..and see how the pins differ from trading so they can remeber them. That's a fun thing too.

How does everyone go about getting traders? I looked on Amazon but the lots' reviews claim many to be scappers while others say they are real....

Welcome to the world's most addictive activity and to the support group that can help enable you! Pin trading and collecting (especially at the parks) is a great family tradition. Enjoy !

Welcome! :) As already mentioned, this is a good place to buy real pins to trade at the parks. Keep an eye out for inexpensive starter sets here on the sales board - that's how I do it. ;)

My little guy has taken an interest in pins with trains & monorails. He doesn't really understand the trading concept at the park yet either, but he gets super excited for a new pin. You may just need to be the trader for your daughter until she feels good about "giving pins away" to get a new one. Best wishes & have fun!!

Welcome! All the advice here is great so far. But just to emphasize, just go for what you love! Every collection is wonderful, no matter how big or small, or if it has a theme or not! If you ever get frustrated, just remember at the end of the day they're just pieces of metal. What's important is the memories you make with them. (Gosh that is cheesy advice I am so sorry.)

One thing that I do is just take the pins that I am willing to trade into the park on my lanyard. I have my keeper pins on a canvas at home that I take a photo of w/ my cell phone so I have a quick reference as to whether I have a particular pin at home when trading.
