Hello pin community! I have always been a Disney lover and collector, but I always said the one thing I wouldn't get into is pins. Well, that changed in the last week. I have no idea where to start. There are tons of terms, acronyms, pin releases going on all the time... I would love tips on where to start or what to read to learn about this new hobby. I know there are a lot of fakes (scrappers?) and I keep hearing about sharks in this hobby, so a direction to go in would be majorly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hi there, and welcome to DPF!

There are a lot of helpful posts in the Guides & FAQs section of the forum:
http://disneypinforum.com/forumdisplay.php?24-Pin-Guides-amp-FAQs

And more about counterfeits and scrappers in the Pin Comparison section:
http://disneypinforum.com/forumdisplay.php?32-Pin-Comparison

Is there a theme you are mostly interested in when it comes to pin collecting? Most of the new and upcoming releases get discussed regularly in the Pin Discussion section. There is so much out there, I find it's best to start by thinking about what is most important to you, what you want to get out of the hobby, etc.. Whether you become a full fledged trader or just a collector of favorites, I'm sure you'll have lots of fun!

Just poke around and get involved in some of the chats and activities - you'll be addicted in no time!

Thank you for the advice, I went and read several of the threads in those sections of the board and I do have a better understand now of some things. :)

I think I want to focus my collection on villains, Maleficent, princess pins, and any collection that catches my eye. The problem is the more I look around the forum, the more I want all kinds of pins from lesser known characters to beloved movies. There really are just so many to choose from.

It is sometimes easier to start with one collection to start with and then expand......I started just collecting Lion King (Well right at the beginning it was actually mulan but changed my mind very early on) but know collect about 7 different collections!! With so many pins and collections to choose from, pick one (or two) to start with but make sure it isn't too obscure to begin with to make trading and collecting a bit easier :) The more well known movie and attractions have more pins so easier to build up a collection. There are loads of people willing to help and give advice, and most of all have fun :)

Welcome! I am pretty new to trading too, you are not alone :- ) And I have the exact same problem! Lion King is my first love but the more I have looked at other pins for sale or trade, or just other people's collections/boards, I find myself wanting more and more sub collections... addictive! There are just so many to choose from :- )

Everyone here is super friendly and helpful so never fear to ask when you have a question, even if it seems silly :D

Hi and welcome to DPF! I'm also another person new to the hobby, and it does seem to be a bit overwhelming trying to learn all the acronyms and such, and I still haven't figured out what I should limit myself to in terms of collecting (as I seem to like every pin I see!) But it seems to be a fun hobby and I've already met so many people at the parks (other guests as well as CM's) just due to talking about pins. This forum has been a great help (be sure to check out the sections that Ninpin linked to, as I've found a lot of useful information in those sections), and like Loomi said, everyone here seems to be very friendly and helpful, so when questions arise, don't be afraid to ask, and those members that know the answer(s) will do what they can to help answer them. :)

Thank you guys for the welcome, everyone I have communicated with so far has been nothing but friendly! I think I have narrowed my interests down enough to focus on villains and princess themes. I'm definitely wishing I lived in Cali or Florida so I was closer to all of the pin releases, it's crazy trying to find ones I want coming out. Not to mention, I just discovered Disney Japan and Paris pins. o.O How I am going to get those, I am not sure, lol.

Hi and welcome! I honestly can't give any better advice than what's already on here as to starting pin trading, but if I think of something I'll let you know. Oh, but also have a bunch of fun! I hope your pin-adventures are great.
