Okay I really honestly don't know what do think about this.ma pin I was bidding on and was in the lead for ended. However for the last 5 minutes and only 5 minutes the server went down. Even I couldn't get in. Now the person offering the pin wants to e tend the auction because a few people couldn't bid in those last few minutes. I have had that happen to me before and I understand the frustration however they did have a week to place bids. I just don't know what to think about extending the auction now. I will be out of town with no way to rebid. I don't want any hard feelings but if we open this can of worms what's to stop someone from not liking the bids Received and claiming serve went down and want to extend the time or cancel? What do you guys think would be fair?
 
I would extend only for the amount of time servers were down like 5 minutes Maybe set a time It won't be perfect for everyone. But they will know and can bid accordingly. Maybe the other person is being made to feel bad because of it? I know that probably doesnt' seem fair to you though. I sure it's a no win situation no matter what they do.
 
The server always goes down during part of anyone's auction...It's kind of luck as to when in the auction it happens. Honestly, if it were my auction I would live with the results and choose from the bids that were offered while the server wa working. That said, I'd be conflicted in your position too.
 
ok , heres my two cents not that it matters but you did ask,

the rules say no extentions, period, I too was in an auction like that and the host decided to extend the auction becuase they were unavailable due to other circumstances,
while we may not like the outcome we all agreed to play by the rules when we post or bid on a pin in auction,

IF you find the rules hard to live with or choose not to follow them, regardless of the why, thats your choice, however, you cannot fault those that choose to follow the established rules and you have but one or two recourses,

A> with draw from the auction and allow those that wish to continue to do so

B>ask the mods or admins if they will allow the "extra" circumstances and go from there?


again please this is just my opinion, and it was asked for not interjected willy nilly. please dont burn out my sad laptop by flaming me for it!!
 
Rules were set and a time was established. If you wait until the last minute then its your own fault. My situation knowing that the server goes down from time to time, I PM a moderator my last minute bid via PM and also the auctioneer saying this is my bid just in case the server went down. The winner should be whoever has the last posted winning bid posted in the thread. Adding extra time could mean that the auctioneer did not like the bids and at the last minute, have a "friend" bid something to win the auction and keep the pin (like this does not happen).
 
if it was on ebay or any other auction, it would not be extended. So the result should stand. Tough luck to anyone waiting till the last minute, that is the chance you take !
 
Here's my possibly way out there suggestion, but thought I'd post it just in the off chance it will help 🙂

If a few members expressed interest in a last minute bid, have only those members PM a moderator or correspodent with their last minute bids. Mad Hatter, if you were planning on upping your bid in the chance that someone outbid you, then you too PM the same correspondent/mod.

Then said correspondent/mod messages the auctioneer with the last minute bids. If he/she likes any of those bids over your original one, then and only then does the correspondent/mod message the auctioneer with your final attempt.


I don't know if that all makes sense, and I know it involves a lot of trust obviously, but don't you have to trust whomever is holding the auction to some extent?
 
I agree i dont think it should be extended i feel that they should have bid earlier also. Its not a new thing that the servers are wonky we all know it happens which is why i bid early. I feel if the moderators do allow this to be extended they are setting a precedence that may open up a whole other can of worms. However I dont want to offend anyone i just feel i am getting the short end of the stick i was in first the whole time and 5 minutes before the end server goes down a couple of peopl complain they couldnt bid in that time (mind you they had not bid at all before then) I have had this happen to me numerous times on other auctions i was bidding on and just felt it was my fault i could have bid earlier and didnt. Unfortunately what happens is not up to me the owner of the pin has already contacted the moderators to get the auction extended so its up to them. I just wanted to see if maybe there is another solution that would be fair to all. As again I dont want anyone upset and lose a friend its not worth that. I was also not able to get in during those 5 minutes as I was getting ready to add to my bid if others threw in a last minute bid. I believe this is a no win situation. 🙁
 
This is ridculous. I agree wth you, lucann and Master...rules are rules....i just made this comment to another gal ii like on here that got banned from the SS cause her package didnt show up and she didnt use a DC. so she couldnt prove she mailed....
anyway. Its kinda like the school bus....if your kid waits til thelast minute and misses the bus cause it came 2 min earlier than usual,,,whos fault is that? You were not outside early enough (ok bad comparrison) but the rules stae no late bids or extentions and we should go with that or next time what if somebodies electricity went out in their home, do they get to bid late? NO

ultimatly its just a pin game, stick to the rules.
 
eBay really has ruined what people think of as 'auctions'. By definition, an auction continues until no one is willing to pay (or bid whatever the currency is) any more. The idea of a set time that the auction instantly ends is really kind of dumb, and eBay is the only company I know of that has ever force-implemented an auction format in this way. eBay _should_ make their auction automatically extend another 5-10 minutes if there's any bid placed in the last 5-10 minutes... I've never understood why they don't do this... I've always wanted to auction something really rare on eBay and clearly state that I _WILL_ end the auction early at some point, pretty much when I feel like it. So if you want to bid, you better bid early, and stay the winning bidder. I think that would be interesting to see the outcome of. 🙂

I've never auctioned a pin here, but do we have to set a specific _time_ that the auction ends? I think it should be on a certain _day_, the auction ends after no one offers to increase their bids after a period of time (like an hour or two). Or everyone that's bidding has to state 'this is my final bid' to indicate they are done and can't bid any higher (another thing done in normal live auctions).

Or how about this: At the specific 'end time', no new bids can be placed by anyone except either the top 3 on the leaderboard, or anyone who is currently active in the auction (meaning they placed counter-bids within the last hour or something). They can continue to place bids until they all have decided they've gone as high as they want.

My understanding of the auctions that take place here, however, is that it's up to the seller who the 'winning bid' is (i.e., since it's pins, not currency, it's up to the seller to decide 'I want what user X is offering'). As such, waiting until the last minute to place a 'bid' really makes no sense that I can think of at all.. You could offer every pin you own at the last minute, but if the first person that placed the first bid is only offering one pin, and it's the one the seller wants more than anything in the world, you still won't win.. So what's the point of waiting?

In my opinion, people REALLY need to get out of the mind set of waiting until the last second to bid (it works on eBay I suppose, but even then there can be internet outages, but no other auction works this way. The activity really shouldn't be encouraged, and it does always hurt the seller). If the rules of the board are that the auction ends a certain time, and you waited to even let the seller know you wanted to bid, that's your loss. It's called gambling (in a sense), you gambled that you could bid in the last few seconds, and you lost. Sorry. 🙂

  • A specific end date and time must be predominately displayed in the original post of your thread. This end date and time must be adhered to, as an auction will not be allowed to end early, or be extended. An auction cannot be closed due to unsubstantial bids.


Given the current issues with the server crashes, this isn't likely to be a unique situation for long. Bottom line: Auctions end when they end, so don't wait until the last minute to make a bid.
 
I think I know the auction your on about. I to would not like to see it extended due to the forum going down. That has been happening alot lately so the other people should have took that into consideration and placed a bid when they had the chance when the forum was not being a pain to load. Stuff happens and the rules should be kept as the auction was going all fine until the last minutes when it crashed.. it should not be extended and if you were going to be chosen the winner anyway regardless of the last minute bids then I dont see why they cant accept your winning bid.
 
I agree it shouldn't be extended because of 5 minutes. We might, however, need some threshold rule if we don't get a new server in place - for example, what if the server was down and no one could get in to post or to PM for the last hour of the auction?
 
I didn't know about the rules. So I amend my answer. It should go in accordance with the rules. If people are giving them grief or pressure, they shouldn't.
 
Maybe an email could be set up for a mod to keep check off and people put the auction title and their bid in the email and state forum is down cant bid. Kind of like a placeholder and when the forum is back up and working the Auctioneer gets the email containing ALL bids (if there was multiple bids sent from alot of people) and MUST post the bids from the email in their auction and then pick a winner..

sounds a bit wishy washy but Im not the best thinker XD
 
Extending the time is against the rules period. They had a week to bid. It is not the servers fault they didn't bid it is theirs for waiting until the last minute. It is a chance you take when you wait. I have lost out on pins because of this or that and I did not bid in time because I waited. I learned it is OK to wait but when you wait until the very last minute you are taking a chance you won't get in in time.
 
This happened to me just this week... I went to bid on an auction that was ending, but the server went down for a good chunk of minutes... So, I missed out, and the auction ended. Was I bummed? You bet! However, I feel rules are rules, and I could have bid earlier. So, it was my loss that time.
 
I would agree that the rules are the rules. If you know what you are going to bid already, then go ahead and bid it. It's like when I bid on eBay - I already have a max price and go ahead and bid that on the auction. If I win it, I win it, if not, then that wasn't the right time for me to get that particular item. It took me almost 7 years of trying to get a grail of mine and I finally got it at a price that was a third of what it had been on eBay for years.
