I have had the exact same issue. I now do a lot of what you described and it works...You can click on the number of people wanting the pin and individually click on the members to see their profile which includes their Wants and Trades.
On a somewhat related note, Pinpics seems to have a glitch that doesn’t let you see all matches. I noticed that when I clicked on a member who didn’t show up on Trade Assist, this person and I actually had matches if I just clicked on Compare in his/her profile.

I think maybe it’s a case of correlation doesn’t equal causation and that there’s no actual rhyme or reason to it
Yay!When I started this thread, I was looking for a pin only 4 people were trading. I followed the advice on this thread, clicked on the number 4, and found someone who also collects and trades cruise line pins. Look what came in the mail today! Now the set is complete.
