So I am wondering what do you do when faced with kid traders and they want a pin you would happily get rid of. I always find myself torn do I make the kids day and just give it to them or do I find really anything small to trade it to them for so they feel like they are a pin trader too! It soooo hard for me to decide. Clearly rather I get something or not is a none factor I was just wondering what everyone thinks makes the children the most happy!
 
If a kid has traders I will usually trade. That is what they are supposed to be doing with cast and everyone else. And they want to trade! It is part of the fun. Besides they almost always have at least a few pins on their lanyard they don't care for. If you find that they are not able to part with one of their pins or they just don't have pins to trade you can just give the pin to them if you choose to. I have done that too. Of course, do not wear your keepers or your collection on your lanyard. I wear a lanyard full of traders for this very reason.
 
All of the times I've had kids really want a pin on my lanyard, they were traders and they were asking to trade. I never wear anything on my lanyard that I don't want to give away, so if a kid asks to see my lanyard I tell them I'll trade for anything they are interested in. Usually it kind of makes them feel grown up, that they're doing trades with not just cast members but "real people" too. (The parents are always so grateful to encounter kind adult pin traders!)
 
I see nothing wrong with a peacock lanyard. Kids understand when you have special pins that are "just for looking." They ask question about them, might want to touch them. I always say "thanks for looking at my lanyard, I like your pins too." It's hard when you see the LBE the mom has and she's ripping the individual baggies. I usually decline and let them know their pins from eBay are counterfeit. They will never know unless you tell them. If they have a lanyard with starter pins that are real I am fine trading evne a modest rack pin for whatever they have. You can tell sometimes they buy a starter set and have already traded a few away for scrappers and then offer it to you. I take it sometimes, sometimes not. I guess it's a game time decision if they're nice or just looking for better pins.
 
I don't see anything wrong with it either. I just do what I like to do. 🙂

The original question was whether you trade or give away. I've never really had that come up, because I've only had kids who wanted to trade; I've never had a kid admiring a pin but not offering to trade for it. I probably would give a pin away if that happened, if, as the original post says, it was a pin I didn't particularly want to keep anyway.
 
i agreewith vixy. i have 2 senerios. When i go to DTD or around i have a small trader bag that is also my purse. I have all legit traders on there. They are all rack pins of no sentimental value and i use these pins to do both. Kids with lanyards i trade with all the time and over half the time i give pins away to kids on line/ wee kids or crying kids.....thats what i save them for. I personally NEVER wear or trade anything else in the park. Now my experience in WDW is the trading sux.
Cast members are hit and miss with scrappers or they have hidden mickeys which i dont love. I dont see many other traders at all --and im not luggin pins into epcot to trade at the 2 weak tables that are there...just me. I do try to hit an event or pre-arrand trading with folks on here ahead of time.

So yes if a kid has a lanyard, trade. And its ok to not give the world away....i negotiate with them like anyone else, but im more liberal---cause in the big pictrure who gives a sh*t?

truer words have never been spoken. I guess my real concern was which would make the kids the most happy. Havin this nice person give them a pin or feeling grown up and trading for it!

I have always wanted to give away a mind numbingly awesome pins to a little kid (like tangled marquee or designer princess) but I am always worried a profiteer will scam them out of it. I consider telling the parent ya know "don't let your kid trade this pin it is worth a lot" but I don't want to run in to the .00000005% of parents that think their kid doesn't NEED this little peice of medal so instead they take the cash and buy thema rack pin of the same character

Kids are fickle with their pins. They will love it at the moment they see it on your lanyard, but will trade it away the next moment. Don't trade a nicer pin to a kid, he/she will probably just end up trading it to the next person they meet.

This ^ 😀 I wear my "Keeper" lanyard to DL all the time with my Ariel pins on it. Why? Because I LOVE Ariel. My sincerest apologies if anyone interprets it as a "I have this and you don't neener neener boo boo!" ... That's not my intent at all. I do it for ME, no one else really 🙂 Also, I've had little kids ask me "Are you trading those?" and I very politely say "No, they are just for me, these are my special pins" and I don't get disappointment at all. On the contrary, I then get 20 questions xD "Do you REALLY like Ariel?" "How many Ariel pins do you have?" "Which is your favorite Ariel pin?" "Where did you get this one?" "Do you like her better as a mermaid or a human?" and usually followed by "MOM! DAD! Look at her Ariel pins!"

As for the original question, I usually bring my few traders in my pocket when kids do ask to trade. I typically trade just because even if they have nothing that grabs my fancy, I consider it a trader for a trader pin. What REALLY hurts is when the kids have all scrappers... o_<

Whenever I wore my "keeper" lanyard for my marquees I got scolded A LOT. When the hype was at it's worst and folks were having a really hard getting them a lot of people I assumed I was doing to show off because nobody could get them. Its hard for me to wear a lanyard now to the park because I use to get bombarded with questions about what I wanted for them and whenever I told them they weren't for trade they would just get mad.

I think that's just petty and it's really too bad that some people act like that. I can safely say that I have never begrudged anyone for wearing a neat lanyard full of HTF pins. If anything, it's neat to see some of these HTF pins in person instead of just on pin pics. I recently saw someone wearing the Rapunzel/Flynn chair pin. I said, "WHOA! Can I ... see it...?" and thank them for allowing me to do so. I adore that pin but at no point was I mad/bitter/angry and thought, "Stupid show off". I'm sorry that you encountered that Nathan 🙁
 
I had my first pin trade with an adorable little angel named Sydney in WDW. She was on the shuttle to the Magic Kingdom from our hotel with us, and I saw that she had a bag. I was talking to her about how we were going to meet Rapunzel (she had a little Rapunzel dress on, so cute!). She was VERY excited. She liked me so much that she wanted myself and my mom to hang out with her and her mom for the rest of the day! ^^; Of course, that wasn't possible, seeing as they were strangers and we had our own agenda. But we hung around them until we got to Space Mountain! She was a very chatty, very sweet little girl. I hope to run in to her again!

Anyways, I had my lanyard, and I had a Chef Mickey pin. Not exactly a high trader, but I had NO idea what I had lol. She had a baby Mulan from the booster pack (as well as some really nice pins, now that I look back on it!). I chose the baby Mulan to trade with her! She was eating at Chef Mickey's later that day, so she was very excited to get it! It was really fun and I hope to do it again some day!
 
I never wear what I won't trade. I do have a DAK name pin, that of course is not tradeable and then usually a nicer pin across from it at the top, that is usually reserved for a 'special' home. Other than that, everything else is game. I will trade with children, if asked politely (I'm all about manners when pin trading). I also make sure their parents are present and tell them they have to ask them if it's OK to trade. I think kids really like to trade, and it really doesn't matter what they get, they just want to trade. And as someone mentioned above, most just trade what they got from you to someone else later on. LOL What they just have to get from you, is no longer loved 5 minutes later :lol:

I have also given pins to children who don't have pins, just because they were looking at the CM's lanyard and showed interest. It's fun to see everyone's face light up. It's also a good idea to ask the parents first if it's OK to give the child a pin. You never know when said child might pop a pin right in their mouth instead of trading it...lol

I know how awesome it sounds when you think about it to give a kid an amazing pin for next to nothing, but you'd get much more joy out of zapping that pin to someone who actually wants it because, since the little kids don't know the value of certain pins versus others, they'd be just as happy getting a different pin they've never seen of their favorite character. They wouldn't be nearly as happy getting a free Designer Princess as someone on this site who has it in their signature and can't afford it.

I'm a bit different lol I've already set up the lanyard I plan on wearing to the parks this weekend (I'm going down to WDW) and it does have some keepers on it. The reason being I wear a pin everyday (they tend to be keepers about 90% of the time) and it isn't to show off. I love wearing a pin that puts a little of my personal flair into what I'm wearing and I don't mean to make people feel bad.

As for what Nathan said, brush it off and just be glad that you have these pins that people are dying for. Other people are just angry because they can't handle seeing something they want but can't find/get, it's the journey for the pin that makes up a lot of the fun for me 🙂
 
I really enjoy trading with the children/young teens. I try to make sure there are pins on my Open Trader board, or lanyard, that I know I can be flexible with. It just makes my day, to see them smile when they get something they really want.
