Signature Sizes: Is it time to make an announcement?

Signature Sizes: Is it time to make an announcement?
When you go to upload a sig, it says max size is 650x400 I believe or something close to that. Mine happens to fall right below that, so wondering if the site automatically resizes if uploaded to site, and maybe others are using an [ img ] [ / .img] tag in their siggys to bypass this? I can resize if need be, would be nice to get a consensus on what should be the max size.

Thanks,

Gus

As much as I adore gifs (who doesn't!? ;)), I find it really hard to browse lately, as my computer crashes almost everytime I go on a 'gif heavy' thread  So I am all for limiting the amount of gifs in one forum page or something like that LOL... as for signatures, I am sorry mine is kinda big! D: If anyone can resize things for me I will be grateful :) <3

First of all, I hope that I did not offend anyone with this thread as it was never my intention. I know that this site has grown exponentially thanks to the freedom of speech we are allowed and also due to the friendly, and family like atmosphere here.

And I do not expect anyone dig up the old threads about something as boring and as restrictive (LOL) as signatue sizes. However, if there is one immediate thing that can be done, that might be limiting of image sizes ... especially the ones that keep repeating like signatures.

That is why I did resurrect this old thread to bring to everyone's attention.

.... would be nice to get a consensus on what should be the max size.

Thanks,

Gus

This is my point exactly. To hear what the admins of this site think. I have already sent Cicada a PM pointing him to this thread and asking him to give his 2 cents. Of course, we all know that he has to deal with MANY requests and t might be a while before he looks into it.

I kind of disagree with the siggy statment more so than gifs need to be toned down.

First of all, I am not the one who makes the rules. I am, but a humble citizen of DPF - 2 years on March 23rd - yeahhhh!!

But this request/rule was made by Cicada (who is one of the owners and administrators of DPF) more than a year ago. The final word is always theirs imho regardless we agree or not.

Once again, it was never my intention to offend anyone and I am hoping that we will hear from our admins soon.

3 Cheers for weekend !!

Merryweather, I don't think you were offensive at all. AND your new avatar, I can't stop staring at it. It's hypnotizing in a creepy sort of way.

I do think the big siggy's have contributed to the site crashes. I did change mine to help the fight. :) I wasn't a big fan of it anway. :shrugs:

Not sure if that was in reference to my statement, but if so...it looks like words are being taken out of context yet again lol. May I ask where I said Merryweather was being "offensive?" I said she was acting "defensively." I've updated my Siggy just to appease this request by others. I'm not sure if mine was even too big, but I imagine it was, since it was technically 2 with one stacked above the other. I think if people shouldn't post siggy's too large than the forum shouldn't support one past a certain size; in other words, you shouldn't even be able to upload a siggy past a certain size because the computer wouldn't allow you too. Just a suggestion. I have a feeling that even with the siggy and gif changes we will see very little change in the capabilities of DPF. The site needs to be upgraded its as simple as that, but obviously that requires time, money and effort. I agree though that we can all do our little part to help. So I hope my new siggy size is appropriate.

I'd also like to note that adding more rules to this public forum only restricts more of our freedoms. I like the free environment we have here in the sense that we don't have to pay to join or participate and we can freely discuss various topics without much restraint. With all the newly suggested rules to be added will this environment remain the same?

I was replying to Merryweather's post, not your post. She said she apologizing if she offended anyone, I was just saying there was no need to. No hard feelings here or no words taken out of context. I have a bad habit of skimming threads and honestly didn't read your thread all the way through. I agree the site needs to be upgraded, and you make a lot of valid points. I think your signature is very cute as well. We're all here because we love pins, love Disney and love DPF. I think we are just throwing out suggestions to make it better, no personal judgement.

I think i agree with Creativextremeties, is not the size of what you see on the screen, is the file size. Any file that weighs less than 500 k, should be no problem for the site .Really like my signature, and instead do not like small because they simply can not see the pins or their numbers ... then that's the point have a signature?
Just my 2 cents...

Oh...ok...cool. My fault...I just wanted to be clear that's why I asked. :)

Thanks for the siggy compliment. Are the PinPic #'s visible though? I'm kinda having trouble making them out myself which was one of my concerns with making it smaller too :/

LOL I don't think there is a list, at least I hope not. eek.

Well, there is a list Ryan and I have been keeping since we are on the same (almost) gang.

And since I am buddies with the owners, I already sent that list to them

I am done with this thread until an authority weighs in. I shall go and cause drama elsewhere ;)

Wow...that response was a little uncalled for and my analogy taken WAY out of context since that wasn't directed at you in particular. I'm done with this thread as well. You try to give insight and you get crap. Everyone knows you can't turn lead into gold right?

I'd also like to say if my name is on such a list I would have appreciated the issue of my siggy being brought to my attention first rather than the owner directly. This is really ridiculous and the way people have been acting lately is frankly disgusting. What can you make of a public forum that has gone from friendly conversations and transactions to accusations and "black listing?"

"Woah for the Republic"

I have to agree. If your signature is taking up even half of my screen it is way too big. Please do something about it.

Also tone down the gifs. They're funny but my goodness...there are threads that are basically only gifs and that can be really frustrating to get through.

Those are my opinions. :)

I think this is a GREAT thread. I haven't read through all the comments but its seems like with all of the technical problems the forum has been having anything that would add to the problem should be scaled back or eliminated, at least until there is a more reliable server or more bandwidth. I know someone that has a very old computer and when there are gif,pic or image heavy posts they literally cant do anything. Thankfully I have a rocket powered computer so I get no lag or blowback.

However I did roll across a very cute thread that was pretty much entirely rolling pages of gifs in order to show her gratitude for an absolutely beautiful kindness and I have to admit I loved it, although it took me quite a looooong time to roll roll and roll.

As a newish member I never saw the post about sigs, not that I have one, so I think that veteran members posting friendly advice and or reminders about the general policies or preferences of the group is a good thing to do. Mental note...no half page sigs with blinking disco balls and slow fades.

Great idea with downsizing the signatures. I resized mine down to 400X400 which I *think* is within recommendations and what the max size says. I'll keep en eye out for announcements that say otherwise. :)

I totally agree. Gifs are funny and light up some of the posts and illustrate expression we wouldn't normally see but like everyone is saying toning it up a notch would probably help the server break down less.

I do changes in mine , i really miss the otherone...

If it helps your signature is very beautiful... and i can actually see the whole thing without having to zoom out. Sometimes signatures get so wide that part of them is off screen.

I love the big eyed Alice on the purple starred background. It looks really dynamic.

I am actually not sure if gif's and siggy size are what is causing all the crashes. Database and server error 500 means what exactly? We really need a Computer geek to weigh in here.

Also, for me, when the forum crashes it is at peak times, not specific threads, but specific times like noon and 6pm PST. When everyone is on-line. It also tends to be more "crash like" when there is a thread up that everyone is reading constantly, like a big grail auction, a drama-rama thread or a big release info thread.

With that i give you, a pic, not a gif... of some icecream. Because it appears some noses got bent and we need some ice cream love.

My siggy is nice the size it is at, Doodlebug, the wonderful person who made it, offered me 3 diff sizes when it was first made and I chose this one.

Absolutely! Now, where do we find a computer geek ?? LOL ....

You evil temptress, take yer ice cream elsewhere. Don't you know that the OP is on the weight loss challenge ??
