You read it right... I am done with pin trading too...

Well let me clarify that a bit... I am not giving up on you my DPF family, nor on collecting these beautiful gems. I am not going to give up on my auctions, nor on purchasing pins from members... But I will NEVER read a pin Trading thread again... I am soo frustrated with the results I have had in the last couple weeks, that I will never offer trades for peoples pins again... This may seem to you like my form of a drama thread, but I am seriously frustrated... Let's see where do I start...

Many of you watch the activities on this form like a hawk and probably already know why I am frustrated... In the past couple weeks I have attempted to offer trades for items that members announced they were trading... Now perhaps this is a mistake on my part, but I made both PM's very clear as to how much I really wanted their pins... I both cases, I bent over backwards to make numerous offers up to 5 times the value of the pin I was pursueing... But no matter what, once they knew how bad I really wanted the item the replies kept coming back... Well what else do you think you could do??? Now I get the fact that when you have a valuable item, you want to be sure to get the best offer for it... But in both cases, I would be offering items that are on their wants list and have even been able to set up potential trades for up to 6 of their top 10 signature pins... but again the message came back well could you get this sig pin offered from another member...

I do not know if this is common practice in the trading section... But I just do not get it... When someone shows interest in a pin I own, especially one we do not collect, We go out of our way to just make any fair trade so they can have the pin that they like... But I guess not everyone is the same...

I would like to say thank you to all those who do go out of their way to keep collecting fun and fair, and to all those who replied to my thread for help to try to get the pins I needed to make this trade... But I am done with it and if any of you who offered help ever need help from me... I will be there... Just as long as your post isn't in the Pin Trading Section...LOL
 
Moe you're NOT alone. Many (if not most) of us experience the same ordeal. I was in the chat room yesterday expressing the same concern, and luckily I was talking to some amazing people who encouraged that it will and does get better.

I'd say to maybe give it a break. Let time weed out the greedy (or possibly unfair) traders, and trade with honest people who want to help you out as much as you're helping them out
 
Yep...Had the same thing happen to me the last 2 days. I was trying to get my daughter's most wanted pin. The trade seemed agreed upon...until I actually wrote in a reply that it was "my daughter's most wanted pin". Then, all of a sudden I was asked to involve other nice traders of mine in return for not as nice traders from them. It grew from what I thought was a simple 2 for 2 trade...to suddenly a 10 for 10 trade that was clearly one sided. I finally had to just pass on the whole thing. By the way, this was not involving somebody on the forum.
 
I'm sorry you've been having a tough time mo. I know it's tough but you will get the pin eventually, you will find someone who isn't just a greedy mare and will work something out.

Although I don't know you very well I have been silently watching what you have been up to and you have inspired so many people to do fun things here. I wish I could have helped you out but I have so few pins and no big stitch pins to offer you.

i just know eventually you will get what you need in a trade, just hang in there and remember that everyone here loves you to bits!
 
My form of not trading is mostly at the park. A few but few are fair and will work a good trade. But I was there last week and a woman had the DSF Tangled Marquee. I asked what they were looking for it and she replied. Marquee for marquee. Ok, that's fair. So I offered her some or said I can come back and bring them to trade another day we can meet up. Then she replied, no - I'm only looking for the UP or Wall-e marquees in trade for it. I replied really????? An LE 150 and a time tested marquee for a new HOT pin? I looked at her other pins and still wanted double in trade for the rest of her book. I stop by and see the pins available at DLR but it just turns me off in trading there. Second is Trade Assists. I do not supply my Pinpic name as I offer a trade and it's fair and that's it. I hate when they say sorry but I'll take pin XYZ off your trades. I did not offer that so why you asking for a trade totally in your favor. It's also usually in the other persons favor for the pin they want. Just because I want it, doesn't mean I'll take a loss of trade value for your pin. that's why I look very closely to see if I would gave made the trade in reverse. Of course, I take into account that a no will mean they are looking in another direction for the pin I requested.

I feel your pain. Stick with it and the newer generation of trader/ seller will become collectors or will weed themselves out.

I can sympathize on this situation. I know it seems at times I am a Scrooge when it comes to pin trading (no pun intended), but I learned a while ago due to my narrow collecting field, I have had to invest a lot in "high end" traders, i.e. high wants ratios, low LEs, etc just to get a shot to get at some of these Scrooges. At times it feels like that show Barter Kings. I start with one LE1000, trade it for a slightly higher pin, then trade that one for a slightly higher pin to that, etc., LOL.

I know if I get a bite for a pin that is at the end of that chain, i.e. a Scrooge, Sorcerer Mickey we want, etc, I will usually trade in their favor just to get the pin.

The thing I see with this hobby, after doing it for 4 years now, is there is no consistency. I trade/sell Transformers on a forum similar to this one to help fund that hobby, and that is very straight forward. There is no trade/wants ratios, usually no "Limited Editions" that are low in number, etc, so the price/trade value is basically set by the going rate for the figure in question. In this hobby however, there are so many factors to take into account with a trade:

  • What do you have in the pin (cost or trade wise)
  • What is the trade ratio
  • What is the LE
  • How bad do you want the pin being offered
  • Plus more I am sure I am not thinking of
And the problem is not everyone looks at it the same way, which adds to your frustrations. You were on the right track though IMO, trying to obtain pins that person wanted for the pin you wanted of theirs. I am sorry it did not work out the way you had liked, but I would keep trying, it will happen sooner or later.

At least you get offers I live 1000 miles away from a park and when I was going I would collect pins that meant stuff for me and my family which were bad traders, now I find myself buying pins that I think would make good traders, and still I rarely get any offers either here on or pinpics. It gets frustrating I look at the auctions and I can't compete with a lot of offers. I have a few pins I'm going to auction just to get some pins I like. I will just keep looking for deals on pins and hopefully I will find something people want, I just got a craigslist purchase in the mail as we speak maybe someone will want what I got lol
 
I'm sorta sad to hear this, as a newbie who's still building up to where I *have* enough traders worth trading with people. I resolve to be one of the fair and honest traders... once I have things to trade!

I hope you'll still keep up the trade auctions, because those look like SO MUCH FUN and I can't wait until I'm able to play too.
 
Moe, I am sorry to hear that you are having troubles. Maybe just pull back a bit and try to remember that it will get better. Not everyone trades that way. So just take a step back and then try again in the future but just maybe not with that particular member.
 
Maybe that should be a new rule for the forums. No adding more pins to a trade once it's set up or you get the boot out of here. People like that ruin every good hobby out there and take the fun out of it. Or we could just put the names of the people out there who are being so greedy and nobody trades with them
 
OMG. people do this? How obnoxious! I understand wanting to uptrade but changing tactics and asking for more when they find out how bad you want it is rude.I base trades off LE, t/w, sometimes ebay, and of course how baddly I want a pin... not how baddly the other person wants it... I would end us trying to get 5 pins from someone for a rack pin they happen to have as a grail...

I feel your pain, I've done a few trades where the pins just keep adding up but sometimes you have to do it to get what you want... It's frustrating but there's always a limit... I've done a few where i trade my pins for a wanted pin for someone else who has something I want and is how I ended up with no cool pins but obtained something from my collection... Now a days, before I do something like that I let the person know what their wanted pin is going to cost me and try and set up a trade that I feel would be fair for me... If it doesn't work out then just move on... There's always someone willing to help... The people on DPF are really encouraging and awesome... At least some...lol
 
Not all threads in the Pin Trading forum are bad. Broncobilly and I recently had a little trade, I hope we're both happy with , that came about when he said he just wanted to do some trading. However, I have had my fair share of people saying "I just want to trade!" only to find out that they wanted you to OVERTRADE. But I don't think it's the Trade Forum that's the problem. You'll run into the same problem if you just PM a person when you see a match, or I bet in person, the same people would be difficult. Hang around long enough and you begin to learn which people are sincerely willing to help you obtain a pin, and which ones aren't. Then you just don't deal with certain people. Perhaps, your mistake was letting things progress too far in the process? I tend to throw my radar up pretty quick, and try not to become so invested in getting a pin that when the trade possibility goes south it's not that big of a disappointment.

There becomes an issue, though, in that the people I find most helpful usually don't have a lot of in demand stuff. It's seems easier to say yes to trading a pin, that is still just hanging around it's retail price or below. Might as well make someone else happy, as long as your getting something "in the ballpark" and fits a collection. But if you are chasing HTF pins, by not dealing with certain people you limit your options to obtain those pins. There are still some great people that are trading HTF stuff and will deal with you fairly, but if your matches don't work out right, maybe you don't cross paths with them. Also, I think location plays a part. I've found that people who live close to the parks and have a plethora of trading opportunities are tougher to trade with, because they don't need you or your pin. For them, another trade is just around the corner. My best trades usually come from people who live farther away, and online trading is their only way to "get a hit" between visits.
 
It's disgusting the way some traders take advantage of people. Makes it hard to trust anyone, and takes all the fun out of what should be an enjoyable, carefree hobby. I'm sorry this happened to you, Moe. If you ever change your mind and decide to return to trading, we're here for you.
 
If this is who I think it is (always wants your pin on card) then I heard some seasoned traders talking about her last time at the park and while one said they would not trade with her the other said once you put your foot down and let her know you are not going to trade like that she trades better. I am thinking about trying it as I stopped attempting to trade with her a long time ago.

As far as trade requests go some pins on my wants list are not for me and thus not high in desirability for me. When someone offers such a pin for a pin on my trades list I really like I do try to find something I like better. Sometimes that leads to a trade that seems lopsided but if that is the case I am willing to add to my side if asked. I just do not want to give up a pin on my trades list for something I do not like as well. Some pins I have listed as a trader are pins I only have one of but if the right trade came along I would trade it. Those are the ones I am difficult with. Maybe some of your people are like that too. I don't know.

I feel that people keep my name lower in the auctions to get me to bid more and more at times. It is interesting that one day I may be number 3 in an auction and the next day I have traded places and become number 2 when neither person has added to the bidding. I become skeptical of the auction when that occurs and tend to back off my bidding. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the auction format but I already see people taking advantage, IMO. It is the same as you are saying here. Once they find out you really want it they start trying to get you to bid more and more.

I'm so sorry you are having problems, Goofy Moe! I opened this thread afraid that you may be leaving us, but happy that isn't the case.

I am absolutely terrible at pin trading. I just never have anything exciting to offer, and either that or I just don't know enough about trading to have any real success. The one trade I have been able to make recently (my first actual trade in months) has been a bit stressful and I'm afraid I'm getting the run around but I don't want to be paranoid. Add to that the fact that I barely have any forum time anymore due to life leaving little room for it, it's been pretty discouraging >.<

There are so many awesome collectors here that it really outweighs any disappointment on the trading front. Maybe just focusing on your auctions and buying pins and hanging out with other members might be just the thing you need for things to be more positive for you. Hope you have much better pin questing days sooner than later! :hug:

One thing that is sometimes hard to remember is that it is hard to get a match! There are 69000 Disney pins (just Disney, not AP's, accessories, etc) listed on Pinpics. Which means there are over 2 billion possible trade combinations. And that's just for 1 for 1 trades. Each of us going after only a small subsection of pins means there are a lot of non-matches, and value makes a trades that just won't work. We are basically looking for a needle in a haystack, and by comparison odds of winning Powerball are 1 in 175,223,510.
 
I have made perhaps a handful of very fair trades on here. Most of the time though, on here too but mostly on pinpics it is me over-trading for something I want. So I know where you are coming from. You are right of course, the majority of people are looking to come out ahead for themselves. But not everyone. I don't trade like that, never will no matter how many times I feel like just giving this whole hobby up because I have to suck it up and give more than I take, yet again. Keep being a fair trader though, people do notice, and good things will come your way. And it feels better when you haven't forced and bribed those good things out of people.
 
It's amazing and sad how some people are willing to lose their human decency over small pieces of metal. Time for a check in priorities!

I'm just starting out trading online (haven't even worked up enough posts to be allowed to go into the marketplace yet) and haven't had much luck even getting them started on PinPics... Just non-replies so far. No kidding that apparently a "wants" list isn't really a wants list. I'll have to see what happens when someone actually does reply to my trade request some time. Now my guard is up!
 
Sad that people try and take advantage im fairly new to the trading game (8months and counting <3) very new to DPF and Ive had people try to be unfair with me but luckily most people Ive met at PTN (cookie corner! <3) and at pin releases have been so welcoming and helpful (even warning me of certain traders) that you have to just remember there are always weeds in the most beautiful of gardens
