Since the topic has come up multiple times, in discussion threads and in chat recently...

I thought it might be something to discuss a bit. NO, you don't have to reveal your Alt ID, heck you don't need to mention you have one!

But How do you feel about alternate ID's? Why do you think people have them? Do you think they should be permitted? If yes, why. If no, why not?

provided people are not using them to troll, they I dont feel it is my bussiness. But if we took a step in the direction of banning them I would not like it to be IP based because of sharing computers and things, so I think, how would you moderate it?

this is a great point, as most of you know... OleSillySymphJ (even though he is barely on here) is my Hubby and we share computers all the time. Especially when I'm too lazy to get it from across the room lol. I would not want one of us to get deleted either lol <3

I voted yes, and i put it in reply rather than the OP so that it doesnt seem like i am influencing people.

I have an Alt ID. I do not use it to troll, to cause drama, or to anonymously harass those i do not get along with. I use it to be anonymous. I take my alt ID into chat, and even reply to some threads. But it is there simply to let me be here, in the community without being "psycho pixie." lol

Anarchy mentioned, how would we control it. I agree, IP address would not be effective, because my husband has a DPF ID, and our friends have been known to occasionally log in while visiting here.

Great thread to open up the discussion Pixie. Really looking forward to seeing what everyone thinks about this because my mind's completely cloudy in this area of things

I feel like while I am sure some of them are harmless, it just leaves a lot of questions in the air as to what the heck is going on. It's clear when a "newbie" is an alternate ID and not a real newbie as they seem to know all about the insides of the forums and the members after just joining in one day. Then it leaves you wondering 'okay, who created another ID? Why?' My first inclination is to feel they have some sketchy motives behind it. :dunno:

Why do you think people have them?

The only reason I have seen alt IDs pass up in the past on other forums is to troll a member but not wanting to mess up your main ID (cowardly in a lot of the instances I've seen). So that's all I can really draw on. There are some (assuming that they are) alt IDs here I've noticed that are creative (Disney Noir, you undoubtedly have my respect as a writer ;)) but still can't help but keep my guard up not knowing who they are or what the purpose is for their having that ID. Paranoid? Maybe, but I've been naive to my own consequences on the internet before

I don't know anymore to be honest. Would I ever create one myself? No- I just think if I want to be someone else, that's what the murder mystery game is for and other games of the like. But at least people know that anything "Story" has to say will come from "Story's" ID. :)

And as to the IP address thing, I am in the same boat- My mom and brother both have accounts here under the same address. I really think their are easy ways to point out the alt IDs though.

Again, just my opinion and it's not like I'm looking for any hard fast rules to be made here. Hope I don't offend anyone. I'm just really confused as to the point of them.

Everything I was thinking but so much more well written than I would have managed. Thanks, Story.

I don't understand why people would want to have them?

i created my alt ID originally with the intention of figuring out who was saying some nasty things about me. But that got fixed right quick and i didnt need it for that. However, i found that having the alt ID gave me a degree of anonymity which i enjoyed. Not as a way to harass people, or cause problems. But kind of an escape from me being "psycho pixie" whom many folks at the time knew, was having some life issues. 2 of the MOD's know my alt ID. They also know I will never abuse the privilege of having it.

This is one of those things that I think is a moderator issue. Alt IDs should not be used to intentionally cause trouble, or get around being banned. I also don't like it when a bunch of low post/no feedback IDs suddenly show up to support another member. The DIS Boards also has an issue where people use alt IDs to post fake sob stories in order to get a lot of replies to their posts.

If two or more usernames are created and it is obvious that one of them is used way less often and only for mischevious behavior the you could remove/ban the one. But which of our mods has time for that?

Just for reference - The current mode of operation is that Alt IDs receive infractions on *both* that account, and the "regular" account. Yes... we can tell.

We *are* however currently considering tougher punishments for Alt IDs when created and used for the purpose of attacking/insulting someone, stirring up drama, and hiding behind anonymity.

I don't see a problem with them as long as they aren't being used to harass people. A couple people mentioned they share a account with their partner but have one of their own incase they break up with their partner. I don't see a problem with that. However, if you get another account to troll people then you should be banned.

So long as they aren't a scammer trying to get around ttheir bad name, I don't really care. I think it's nice for people that may have made a mistake and want to start over, or something like that. It's really not my business either way I suppose! I think they should be allowed as long as they aren't being used for evil purposes haha

I have never felt a need to hide behind a keyboard... If I have something to say, my name will be attached to it...

That being said, there should be an exception for Disney_Noir as his writting is very cleverly written and I would hate to lose him to the shadows forever... LOL...

Why would anyone do that? Why hide? This raises a lot of questions now. What happens if you get banned and then come back with an alternate? What about the Auctions? People can use them to shill bid. It's simply unethical and probably used for unethical purposes.

none of my business unless they are causing a problem. I think it's kind of what's the point but I don't have the time to let it bother me.
