How much is too much? (specifics and in general...)

I've recently gotten in to pin trading (it's true - this is my first post!) - and I've never spent more than $25 on a pin BUT there is a pin that I've wanted since I started collecting (I know I know - not long but still ) that I'm debating on getting. But the question is, how much is TOO much? Here's the pin-

What price do you guys think is reasonable?

This brings up the other question I had (and I'm sure there are other threads about it...) - but how much is too much in general? As in, do you have a certain price point that you just will not go higher than?

When I first started it was "I'll spend $10 but c'mon! I'll never spend $20 on a silly pin!"

shortly after it was "I'll easily spend $25 but c'mon I'll never spend $50 on a pin!"

now? I dunno.... What's the limit?

Sadly, I apparently have no limit. I mean, I won't pay $450 for a pin I think is worth $100, but I'd pay $100 easy for a pin I think is worth it.

I'm not a Scrooge expert, but I wouldn't think $40-$50 for that pin would be outrageous.

I think it really all depends on the pin and how much you really want it. Like Erica said, I wouldn't go spending crazy amounts on pins that aren't worth the money, but there are pins that I definitely upped my max amount for at one point. If you want older Disney Auctions LE100's that are rare and hard to find, chances are you will have to spend some $$$ money at some point.

Just wanted to point out your specific pin dilemma: I'm an avid Scrooge pin collector, and prices (like many of the older pins) fluctuate wildly...Scrooge pins are no exception. I have seen that particular pin go for as little as $50.00 auction-style, only to see another of the same pin sell for close to $100.00 two weeks later

Welcome, another Scrooge Collector! That one has been a bane in getting for my own collection. It is an LE100, that sold for $36 originally. There is currently one on EvilBay that is up to $51, with 2 days to go, so it might hit $60-$70 easily.

MaeBlum is right, if you want those older LE100s, they could be big bucks or a lot of traders for the one pin.

As i have no idea on how much that pin could possibly be I’ll just answer the more general question. For me (currently) i would not pay any more than £40 on a single pin (If i become silly rich then to heck with that number for the time being tho that’s my limit) but for a set I’m much more flexible. More bang for your buck I guess... well at least that’s what I would like to think =)

Thanks to everyone for the info/advice! I'm glad I stumbled on to this forum a little while back.

I think the sentiment is right - I'll either be upset that I paid too much or upset that I didn't get it at all!

I don't generally care about LE's or how rare any pin is - I've never been in to collectibility for collectibility's sake (like a lot of you I'm sure). Though this may be the pin that sets the new $$$ bar for me... especially seeing as how Scrooge pins aren't exactly "common".

The other thing that's related to this, is that the longer I collect the more theme's I seem to be collecting It's like a vicious cycle! lol

I have never spent more than $30 for a pin. Sure there are plenty of them that are worth more than that. I just figure I do not need to have them. Pick a number and stick with it. It keeps the collection down and it helps prevent buyer's remorse.

Ha ha ha - you're asking a group of addicts hon! Obviously some of us far, far worse than others.

Since we're not really in a confessional right now, suffice I've gone [::cough::] very high [::cough::]on pins I really, really wanted. I haven't caved on the one I really want...but it is currently on the market for nearly $1k - but it's an older D.A.L.E. 100.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, there are naughty addictions and then there are Disney Pins. At least it's an addiction no one has to hide from clergy! The older or harder to find the pin is, the more you're going to have to fork over...supply/demand. If you get in too deep you can always sell it.

If you are a REAL diehard for that character/theme/movie/ride, then you will not mind the extremes to which you will subject yourself to show your appreciation. Overnight-rain-soaked pin lines, red-lining the 'bay bids, trading multiple multiples for one pin, and yes...even dressing up. Liquidhavok, you just opened up a whole new can of worms, and you will probably run into stark-raving-mad pin collectors who will laugh heartily when they reminisce about the first time they paid $25 on an auction and thought, 'Wow, I can't believe I spent that much on a pin!' Best advice: pick one character/theme/movie/ride and stick to it, decide if it's going to the grave with you, and pay what you feel the pin is worth. Good luck and happy trading!
