Under normal circumstances, I would completely agree with this. Always best to discuss with the culprit before going to cry to mommy and daddy...

BUT... the way Judy words her response, leads me to believe it was one of two people that are unfortunately just as Judy described. Too bad these people have to ruin other people's relaxation and enjoyment.

Hi everyone; thanks for the concerns -- the new chat filter was activated based on a few complaints and suggestions we have received over the last few months. However, (as you all may have noticed) the DPF team has been extremely busy as of late with non-forum-related engagements & activities.

Yesterday, I had the chat filter installed, however it was installed with the "default" suppression list that the vendor supplies. I had no idea it was extremely strict, and thus we have re-configured it to censor the most "popular" obscenities. If there are any words that should be added to this list, please contact us using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of each page, or send any of the Administrators (myself, Bricklayer or thejessta) a PM and we will take a look at the merit of the request.

For what its worth coming from me, I cant believe that people have to use the language I have heard so much about. Its one think to slam someone but to use foul language is just a sign of weekness and immaturity. There are far bigger and better words that can be used other than these type of foul words. I guess George Carlins list of 7 would apply.

I may have made mistakes before in what I say but I would never use the words mentioned publicly or privately. I understand Jasons problem that if you do chat and type a long sentance, you dont know if a word you used is a flagged word and it makes it difficult to chat.

I thought that you should be allowed to use any descriptive words in private chat but then again, the offender can then privately message the foul words to specific people.
 

The real shame of it is that if it is one or two people, those people should be spoken to, not the entire site changed.

Now I'm sure I'm going to get slammed and I know I said I wasn't going to post anymore, but I feel I need to say something here. I feel this place is turning into another Dizpins type site. I hate being treated like a child. I'm an adult and the last time you were in chat Judy, I was there and I used some colorful language so maybe I'm the one you are speaking about. Maybe the one thing that Dizpins did right was not to let children under 16 use chat and just block the words and not the whole sentence. I know "shark" came out something like @#$%^ and it made it much easier than "Your message contains text that is restricted by the chat filter. Please rephrase your message and resend." Like I said in the beginning, I'll probably get slammed as I usually do when I post but, so be it.
 
I just logged on and saw this new thread; and my firstreaction was to log onto chat to see what would happen. It is a great way to increase the users in Chat and goes to our natural tendencies to challenge boundaries.

Remembering the old Dizpins censorship, I typed an inquiryon whom liked the Disney character Dick Tracy. Nothing happened. Also mentioned Mary Poppin’s actor and Disney legend, Dick van Dyke. Nothing happened, (Back in the old Dizpinstime both actor and character would disappear under random characters). Moved onto the Bond Girl / villain , ***** Galore. Again, nothing happened.

So full of killing cat curiosity, I read through thisthread. And, especially occurring onAmerican’s Independence Day (a day dedicated to celebrate the American spiritof freedom), I found the thread quite ironically chilling. I suppose it occurring on September 17 might be more apropos, but I digress.

I find this new censorship folly disturbing. To be perfectly blunt, it fails at its apparent goal of keeping Chat safe. Anyone with a half of brain can undermine the censor program with a simple juxtaposition and/or substitution of letters – i.e., fcuk or a$$. These terms make it quite clear what the author means (unless, of course they are discussing French fashion).
Furthermore, it takes the responsible of acting reasonably away from the user and puts it into the hands of the programmer; therefore substituting the users’ belief what is proper decorum to that of the programmers. I personally believe that is wrong on a number of levels.

As shown above, others might be offended by fictional characters like Mr. Tracy or Ms. Galore; others might not. You might find the term shark offensive; but if you live in San Francisco bay area there is a good chance they are your hockey team.

What about cursing? My god, ‘swounds! There is a time where that sentence might have gotten me excommunicated at best. Times change though.

I can continue with examples, but there numerous booksfilled with the threats and folly of censorship.

Therefore, I will simply retreat to my old standby. As my posting signature block stated onDizpins and other websites:

Personally I do not find "FCUK" offensive at all. When in London on the High St I shop at the French Connection UK quite frequently.
 
I can understand BOTH sides of this debate. I firmly believe in erring on the side of caution. There is no way to know you are speaking to an adult in chat (and yes I am going there again) If there was a way to regulate the age group I would say go for it, say what you have to say anyway you want to say it. However there are children that go into the chat and personally my kids are grown now but if my lets say 13 or 14 year old went in there to discuss pin trades and disney etc and I found some of the things that have been said I would be MAJORLY upset. Yes I know it is the parents responsibility to know what and where their kids are on the internet yet we all know sometimes its just not that easy. So I think the best thing is to just take it to private chat thats just my view on this. As for all of the personal slamming people lets all assume we are adults and remember our manners and what our parents taught us " If you do not have anything nice to say then do not say anything" Some day some where someone is going to really get hurt or upset and then it could get ugly really fast. You truly never know exactly who you ar speaking to or what they are capable of. Just my point of view doesnt mean its right or wrong just what I think.
 


When quotes and words from the past are taken out of the context of their time I don't think they carry the same meaning. Today, I just can't believe that they would be saying those words in relation to this topic. Nobody is restricting anyone's freedom of thought and there is nothing stopping anyone here from opening their own site where they can express themselves to their hearts content.

But this is a privately run site and considering that it is related to Disney, should be family friendly. If someone were to come into your home, disrespect your house rules, cuss at you family, and cause trouble, what would you do? Probably throw them out. Not chalk it up to freedom of speech because that was not the intent of freedom of speech. Same thing applies here. This is an online "home" created by the mods so it is their house rules. If people don't like it, they don't have to be here.

The way I see it, you can either apply a filter in attempt to protect people from themselves or start banning people for repeated offenses. Is that the better option? Sure, anyone with half a brain can get around a filter, but even someone with only half a brain should still know that foul language should not be used on a Disney fan site.

I think foul language is disturbing, no matter what age. Just crossing from 17 to 18, or whatever age, does not make it ok to witness. There are several people who are old enough (or even sadly older than enough) that do not enjoy constant cussing and cursing.

DPF has been up and running for 9 months (or so ?) and these filters are installed just now. Why do you think??

Also, it is so possible to insult/disturb/pollute without 4 letter words. I wish in addition to a grammar filter, the mods could also install a civil/polite filter.

If people who fought and died for frredom of thought/speech, fought and died so we can use 4 letter words on forums, I'd say they have gone cheap.
 
Sometimes if the right thing to do is the wrong thing and the hardest and we should really appreciate what people have to say but don't act like what it is. You know?
