GUIDE New park authentication on pins

According to Disney pins blog, park pins are going to start having a cubic zirconia Mickey head on the back to help ID them as genuine. Anybody encountered this yet? Any guesses how long until it’s faked?

I wonder if this will be added later in the manufacturing process to help with scrappers or if it’s going to be early enough to make no difference there.

I think this must be an early april fools. One Disney doesn't have to money to care about this stuff right now. Two the example picture doesn't even look like a mickey head cause the stones for the ears are to big and too far apart. And they wouldn't impliment it as three stones and then go to one stone latter as again then the 3 stones wouldn't meet the criteria for authentic. Also CM's wouldn't be allowed to tell guests they can't take there pin because its fake so Disney wouldn't invest in this. The whole thing seems like a bad joke that posted early. I call April Fools.

Additionally looking at the sample photo the line around the "authenication" mark isn't the same thickness as the outline around the main disney info box on the back of the pin.

No wonder pin prices are going up. Seems like a rather crazy idea, actually. And I agree with @TheMickeyMouseRules - Just something else to work on keeping tabs on and something that will in the end be a nothing thing. Scrappers may suffer first of, but they'll get a fake version that will look the same or better than Disney's in the end. At least it won't affect pins from the front. But that would explain the 20% increase in all pins in the last short time.

It won't work any more than any authentication attempt has in the past. As long as the same factories that are producing the real pins are producing the fake pins, they have access to all the materials.

I appreciate the thought, but it seems like the people coming up with the latest ideas have no reference/background on why the previous attempts failed. When they keep laying off the people who know what they're doing...

It isn't a fake. We were at the Animal Kingdom Lodge gift shop yesterday, and there was a new pin card that had two pins on it (one pin is Kevin and Dug, the other pin is Carl with Baby KEvin on his head), and I got it. Undid the pin backs to see if it had it and there it is. It is really tiny, really cheap feeling, and rather odd to have a lump on the back of the pin. But it is there. On at least one other pin we bought, too. So, I think it will just be one more thing to keep track of. You can't tell it isn't metal, actually. It just looks like a lumpy metal mickey head shape on the back of the pin.

So does it prevent the pin from sitting flush on whatever you push the pin into to keep your collection? (i.e. pinbag or pinfolio or corkboard etc.) Curious if is going to cause more stress to be on the pin post or not?

I don't think it is going to affect it, as it does not stick out farther than the nubs around the pin post. I'll look at it closely tomorrow and see how it pins on and let you know! :)

Here is an example of one.

Can you actually touch the stones that make up the Mickey, or is there a clear resin or something covering it? (Kinda looks like that in the photo, but can't tell if it's just an odd reflection or not...)

They're sort of inset? But I don't think there's a coating over them overall.

I happened to trade for one of the new pins last week. Here are some pics for reference:

This is the front of the pin just to show which one it is.

I was talking to a friend and looking online and it appears that some cast members are requiring "diamond" pins to trade for their
better pins. Although I can see the sense in this, do you think is it against pin trading policy that says cast members "must" trade with you?

Interesting that you share this. I have a colleague who was looking to trade for the Pongo Disneyland D Hidden Mickey and the cast member took 2 pins from her worth $55 for his one pin. I don’t know if he kept those pins on his lanyard or hid them for his own personal collection but I found it VERY odd to ask for 2 pins when it’s supposed to be a 1-1 trade. 😠

Q:

What are the guidelines for Disney Pin Trading?
A:

When you are trading Disney Pins at the Disneyland Resort, please follow our etiquette and location guidelines for trading.

Pin Trading Etiquette

  • Official Disney Pins
Only official Disney pins may be traded. The main criteria when judging whether a pin is tradable or not (although other factors may be considered) is that the metal pin needs to bear a “©Disney” mark on the back, representing an official Disney event, place, location, character or icon. A Disneyland Resort Cast Member has the sole discretion to determine whether or not a pin is tradable.
  • Pin Condition
Pins should be in good, undamaged and tradable condition, with the pin backing attached.
  • Safety
For a safe trading experience, please trade one pin at a time.
  • Trading Maximum
Trade a maximum of 2 pins per Cast Member or trading board, per day.
  • Ask First
Please refrain from touching the pin or lanyard of a Cast Member or Guest. If you need a closer look, kindly ask the Cast Member or Guest wearing the lanyard to give you a clearer view.
  • Not Exchangable for Trade
The following may not be exchanged or in any way used when making a trade for a pin:
    • Monies
    • Gifts
    • Vouchers
    • Receipts
  • Pins That Are Okay to Trade
    • Any tradable pin that is not currently displayed on a Cast Member’s lanyard or trading board (when trading with a Cast Member)
    • Pins from other business units of The Walt Disney Company (e.g., ABC and ESPN), when a Cast Member determines them to be tradable
    • Operating participant pins that show a Disney, Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort affiliation (generally acceptable for trading)
  • Pins That Are Not Okay to Trade
    • Unauthorized pins, plastic pins, rubber pins or other nonmetal pins
    • Personalized name pins
    • Brooch-style or clasp pins
    • Disney Service Award pins, Disney Legacy Award pins, Spirit of Disneyland Resort pins, Partners in Excellence pins or Cast Member costume pins (including Host/Hostess badges and Disney Trainer pins)

So yeah, diamond trading has become a thing in recent months at DLR. Basically I think it's being taught to cast members who know nothing about pins as a way for them to avoid getting scrappers for real pins. It's becoming more common. I don't hate it as it's getting more real pins out there onto boards and lanyards. But it means I have to make sure I have a stash of diamond pins for trade with me at all times. It's silly when they wind up turning down legit nice older pins, but it is getting better stuff in general into circulation when they do it.

My FAR BIGGER COMPLAINT is now more cast members are doing "blind trading" where all the pins on their hip pack are backwards, you have to hand them your pin for trade and then they give you whatever piece of crap is on the pack. It's AWFUL. I have repeatedly complained about it at the Chamber of Commerce in DCA as this is not happening in DL where they just do trivia or diamond trading. It's something that only CM's in World of Disney and DCA are being encouraged to do and it is RUINING the trade experience. I complain loudly to leads any time I encounter someone doing this. Because every time it is with a CM who *hates* pin traders, promises they have great pins if you just give them something good, then you wind up with something less than what you traded that you don't want and they refuse to allow you to have your pin back instead. I literally had a CM sneer at me after swearing she had great pins for trade and then giving me crap "well, then you shouldn't have done the blind trade." Haha. She literally laughed at me.

Yes, I complained to the plaids. No, they can't do anything about it and keep suggesting writing to Disney corporate when this is clearly a local management issue. It sucks. But now I know anyone doing blind trading is intentionally trying to make pin trading a bad experience for guests by stealing their good pins and refusing to give them back. So yeah, THAT is the bad stuff and the bad CM's to watch out for.

Holy cow, ALL BLIND TRADING?! That’s terrible. I love a good mystery/trivia but your story makes me hesitant to trade with those certain cast members now. I’m not going to the park anytime soon but the attitude from that one cast member ticks me off. If she had just said “sorry but those are the rules” WITHOUT the attitude I’d be fine. 🤬

Problem is those really aren't the rules.

Most of the times the pins are facing forward except for a few special pins. I see a lot of mystery boxes that are in some of the stores and resorts. A box of lettered boxes, you choose the box then determine if you want to complete the trade or not.
